Cell C Team White wins the Cell C Inanda Africa Cup 2020 Title.
It was a day of riveting polo at the Cell C Inanda Africa Cup which took place this past weekend, at the Inanda Club located in the heart of Sandton.
The match brought a pivotal moment for Development Polo as the Cell C Team White, captained by Zompie Totetsi (2), led his team members, Thokozane Zondo (1), Bafana Skhosana (-1) and young aspirant player, Motlatsi Tsakatsi (Lala) (0), to victory, winning the clash for the 2020 championship title and clinching the most coveted polo trophy.
With their distinctive team colours, players flaunted some thrilling action and extreme skills resulting in a final score of 6-5 over the Cell C Team Orange.
Cell C Team Orange who finished in second place, included the skillful young player and captain, Donono Lithula (2) joined by team mates Nathi Chabala (1), Jabulani Magagula (0) and Joe Sello (-1).
The fervor of match commentator Matt Pohl, kept everyone on the edge of their seats throughout the grand finale match. The score was 0 - 0 at the end of the first chukka. Zompie Totetsi (2) scored the first goal, putting Cell C Team White in the lead. Great competitive play by Thokozani Zondo (1) followed by Motlatsi Tsakatsi (Lala) (0) each scoring a thrilling goal in the last seconds of chukka two. The third chukka was commanded by Cell C Team Orange with Jabulani Magagula (0) scoring 2 consecutive goals within under a minute. The team’s scoring streak followed through to the fourth and final chukka with Nathi Chabala (1) scoring triumphantly in the opening seconds evening the score to 5 – 5. In the closing minutes of the the game, Motlatsi Tsakatsi (Lala) (0) scored a masterfully played winning goal, leading to the Cell C Team White’s glorious victory of 5-6.
Craig James, Polo Manager and owner of the City Polo at Inanda comments. “The performance of the youngsters was a fantastic testament to the Polo talent in South Africa, and we are so proud of them”. He continues and reflects to a moving start of the Covid-19 Pandemic, “I went into lock-down level 5 in late March 2020 with 90 horses and 25 grooms, it was a tricky period, but today we had the opportunity to showcase those player skills refined over the period”.

The Best Pony was awarded to Asset Turnover, owned and ridden by Donono Lithula (2).

Further highlights of the day included the thrilling ‘horse vs machine’ race where the speed of a polo pony was put to the test in a sprint against the electric turbo AC V- Cobra, proving it to be, as the automakers called it, an “honourable contest”. The polo pony, Bling, ridden and owned by Zompie Totetsi (2), pitted against the sports model and took the race in a close finish.
