On Monday, the 29th of October 2018, Xi’an City Wall became an International Fashion platform, showcasing over 60 contestants from over 50 countries worldwide. Seven girls from Africa had the opportunity to represent their country to over fifteen million viewers across the world, for the converted title of LOOK OF THE YEAR. These countries included: South Africa, Angola, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Rwanda and Botswana.

This 90-minute televised fashion and entertainment extravaganza was hosted by Li Chen and Cindy Bishop (host of Asia’s Next Top Model). The panel of judges, included Heavenly King Leon Lai, Fashion Blogger Peter Xu, 2007 Elite Model Look World Final Winner Jennifer Messelier, President of the Jury Michaela Goddard Quesada, Ford Models New York Kwok Chan, Ford Models Paris Alexis Louison, Premier Models London Carole White, Nomad Los Angeles Roman Young, Donna Japan Jean-François Leroux, Why Not Models Milan Tiziana Casali, Stephan Moskovic, MSO Jelena Ivanović, Former President Ford Models Joey Hunter and Madwood Studios Michael Flutie and Sun Xi Wen. Produced by Star Fashion and Xi’an City Wall Tourism Development and styled by seven-time Victoria Secret Show Stylist Todd Thomas.

After nine days of intense deliberation and model boot camps, our Julianna Veenis (who represented the Netherlands and South Africa) went head on head with France’s Lou Blusson for the top spot, where head celebrity judge, Leon Lai, made the final decision of Frances win. The African delegation brought home two prices, to which Veenis was placed second and Angola’s Rossana Castelo placing in the finals, each earning them a prize package of $10 000.00. All our girls represented Africa at this internationally recognised model search, with flying colours.

Before leaving Xi’an, Veenis & Castelo had to take part in a photo shoot, which will see them in campaigns representing Xi’an City and Look of the Year 2019.

“For decades models from Africa have been under represented on international runways and in modelling competitions. We are working hard to change this and belief than an era of multi-culturalism and diversity has dawned,”

says Jan Malan, the African Scouting Director for Look Of The Year
