What is Coronavirus?

Well it's more serious than someone just drinking a few Corona beers and getting drunk. 🙈

Coronaviruses are a large group of viruses that are common among animals. In rare cases, they are what scientists call zoonotic, meaning they can be transmitted from animals to humans.

The virus can make people sick, usually with a mild to moderate upper respiratory tract illness, similar to a common cold.

Coronavirus in Numbers

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO) as of 30 January there are 7711 confirmed cases of patients who have contracted the coronavirus.

Since the  outbreak was reported on 31 December 2019, the virus has now reached every region in mainland China with the last confirmed case reported in Tibet.

Infections have also spread to at least 15 other countries, including Germany, Vietnam, Japan and India, and the death toll has risen to 170.

In just 48 hours the Chinese government has turned an empty building and a few containers in to a hospital for 1000 patients who have contracted the Coronavirus. Another hospital is under construction which should house another 1300 patients and is scheduled to be finished on 5 February. Plans for a third and a fourth hospital are also underway.

What are the Symptoms?

The following symptoms are present when contracting Coronavirus:

  • Runny nose
  • Headache
  • Sore throat
  • Fever
  • Cough
  • General feeling of being unwell

For those with a weakened immune system, the elderly and the very young, there's a chance the virus could cause a lower, and much more serious, respiratory tract illness like pneumonia or bronchitis

How to prevent contracting or spreading Coronavirus?

There are currently no vaccines available to protect you against the human corornavirus infection.

Transmission can be reduced by practicing the following:

  • Washing your hands often with soap and water or hand rub
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands
  • Cover your nose and mouth when coughing and sneezing
  • Use a tissue when sneezing or a flexed elbow
  • Throw tissue into a closed bin after use
  • Avoid close contact with anyone who has cold or flu-like symptoms
  • Thoroughly cook your meat and eggs
  • Avoid unprotected contact with live wild or farm animals

If you are mildly sick, keep yourself hydrated, stay at home and rest.

If you are concerned about your symptoms, you should seek medical attention.

Duah/Prayer for protection from the Coronavirus

Allahumma inni a-oo-dhubika minal bar-si wal ju-nooni, wal-ju-dhaami, wa min say-yil as-qaam.

O Lord, I seek your refuge from leprosy, insanity, mutilation and from all serious illness.
