As the winter winds blow their way through the Western Cape, now is a great time to enjoy flying kites through the chilly skies.

Making kites is also a fun and healthy family activity that encourages creativity and expression. For this reason, the popular kite-decorating workshop makes its return to the Liberty Promenade shopping centre from 1 – 10 July 2022.

This year’s kite workshop aims to create awareness of children’s mental health and the impact the COVID-19 pandemic has had on their well-being. A recent study showed that South Africa has one of the lowest mental health scores in the world, and that mental health and wellbeing worsened during the recent pandemic.

Children of all ages are invited to decorate their own kites using paints and various other craft materials provided. The workshops will take place from 12:00 – 4:00 PM, with 30-minute sessions daily from 1 – 10 July. The cost is R 10 per child and proceeds will be donated to Cape Mental Health non-profit organisation.

To participate, simply register your child at the ticket booth in the centre’s Food District. (Slots are limited). Furthermore, participants stand in line to win one of ten R 250 gift cards by posting a photo of their decorated kite and tagging the mall on Facebook or Instagram with the #KiteArtPromenade.

Carol Bosch, Cape Mental Health Deputy Executive Officer, explains:

“It is important for parents to ensure that children feel supported as they grow up. There are many ways in which we can support our children to ensure that they develop good mental health.”

The organisation provided a few tips:

  1. Talk openly about feelings in a way that children can understand
  2. Follow a routine
  3. Teach children healthy ways to cope with stress
  4. Make time for play, get them moving, and have FUN
  5. Watch out for signs of mental distress
  6. Talk to a professional if you are struggling with parenting

“The importance of mental health has become even more visible through the pandemic as children now have an additional layer of challenges to deal with”,

says Brenda Bibby, General Manager at Liberty Promenade.

“We are thrilled that we can host these workshops, which promise hours of healthy fun, and contribute to Cape Mental Health, who do such vital work, in the process”

she added.
