Chefs to bring culinary delight at Liberty Midlands Mall’s #LoveLocal Chefs Kitchen


Liberty Midlands Mall, which celebrates its 15th year as the largest and most popular retail destination across the Pietermaritzburg area, is gearing up for its ever popular #LoveLocal Festival this year from 26 - 28 October 2018.

The festival brings a weekend full of proudly local exhibitions, a locally inspired curated marketplace, outdoor movie nights as well as the ever popular cooking shows featuring our favourite foods, celebrities and chefs.

This year’s #LoveLocal Chefs Kitchen Festival has an awe inspiring line up, consisting of 7 world-class local chefs, who will be partnering up with great celebrities, to offer Midlands a weekend to remember.

Celebrities who will be teamed up with the best of the best will be that of Gabriel Sithole, Wildlife Photographer, Ford Nature Warrior Brand ambassador and breakfast co-host on Vuma FM; Vanessa Marawa, Vuma FM presenter and winner of Survivor; Darren Maule and Kerri Miller, Jane Linley Thomas and Mags Westerhof of East Coast Radio; Masood Boomgaard , Comedian; and Keagan Buchanan, Maritzburg soccer star, who will all be cooking in a state of the art, fully equipped kitchen sponsored by Aurora Interiors.

First up, in the line-up of participating chefs on Friday October 26 at 5:30pm is Cheryl Govender from the Cake House based in Prestbury, Pietermaritzburg, who will be adding much sweetness to the chef’s kitchen. The cake house is best known for their extensive repertoire of crafting unique cakes for every occasion.

Kick starting Saturday, October 27th at 11:30am, is Roxy Mortimer of the #Lovelocal Chefs Kitchen, born and bred in the Midlands, who has always had a passion for food. She began her culinary career as a waitress at Studio Café at Hilton Quarry, moved up the ladder to become franchise manageress before owning her own restaurant, that of Copperfields in Howick.

Third up, at 1:30pm is no stranger to the chefs kitchen, executive culinary artist Wayland Green from Granny Mouse Country House & Spa. 33 year old Green, originally from Glenwood in Durban, received his training through the Hotel Training Academy from 2002 to 2004, where he completed studies in Food Preparation, French, Food Costing as well as Food Theory. He has many years of culinary knowledge, having worked at Woodridge Country Estate, Figata Food Emporium, owned his own catering company and was head chef at Fudart until he was given the opportunity to work at Granny Mouse.

Then at 3:30pm is Chef Gregg Oosthuizen, chef and co-owner of award winning Sagewood Café in Pietermaritzburg. He has vast experience having worked in kitchens with international chefs Marco Pierre White as well as Anton Mossiman. In his earlier years, he also represented South Africa in both junior and senior competitions and achieved second place in the World Junior Chef Championships. He also had the honour of being the preferred caterer to the Nelson Mandela Foundation.

Last on the Saturday line up at 5:30pm is Chef Lorenzo Giliomee of Fordoun Hotel and Spa, who brings with him a wealth of experience gained through working at some of the top establishments in the country, as well as stints overseas. Having graduated from the highly respected Christina Martins school of Food and Wine in Durban, South Africa where he studied under Christina Martin herself, Lorenzo started his culinary career at Critchley Hackle Lodge in Dullstroom, Kapama Game Reserve, Sabi Sabi, Ivory Tree Game lodge, Sir Richard Branson’s Ulusaba Reserve, amongst others, as well as in restaurants in Israel.

Sunday, October 28th at 11:30am sees Chef Jen Pretorius of The Farmers Daughter, which started as meals at markets, events and catered meals for customers to eat at home. As the demand for her meals grew, Jen went on to open her restaurant on the meander in 2014. She prides herself on using only local suppliers, empowering local people and keeping to the traditional French methods of cooking.

Ending off Sunday at 1:30pm is Chef Joy Ngobese of Gwahumbe Game and Spa, from Howick in Natal. Nogobese graduated at ICESA with a hotel management diploma; however her passion has and was always food. After graduating she went on to work at numerous hotels and lodges in KZN and then was offered a once in a lifetime opportunity to work at the Ritz Carlton in the United States for a year. Joy has been at Gwahumbe Game and spa for the past 6 years and describes food as being music to her soul.
