Discovery Jacaranda FM #SpringWalk Unfreezes Gauteng’s fitness
Local radio station, Jacaranda FM, in partnership with Discovery, have once again not only trended on social media, but at the same time have helped many Johannesburg and Pretoria residents shake off the last of the Winter blues at the annual Discovery Jacaranda FM Spring Walk.
The “Unfreeze” concept was embraced and the event was well attended, as fitness enthusiasts poured in for the 7th iteration of this popular event which had a new home, Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria.
The total number of entrants across all the races totalled a staggering ten thousand participants who created a sea of orange around the iconic Loftus stadium. The most popular races proved to be the 5km walk and the 10km run.
The Kiddies Mile was a new introduction and saw many younger members and their parents getting their fitness goals activated. The idea of getting fit as a family, getting active in the morning air; as well using RFID chips to record performance-times, was also well received.
“This week, the World Health Organisation released a study saying one in four people are at risk of developing various lifestyle diseases like hypertension, heart disease and diabetes because of little or no physical activity. The 10 000 people that took part in today’s Spring Walk are taking a positive step in ensuring they don’t become statistics of the dangers of sedentary behaviour and we applaud them,”
said Iona Maclean, Head of Experiential Marketing at Discovery.
Minisha Patel, Marketing manager from Jacaranda FM shared,
“It’s our aim to bring families together and encourage participation in physical activities across Gauteng. Once again, our listeners did not disappoint and came out in their droves to walk (or run) alongside the beautiful and iconic landmarks in Pretoria."
Once the exercise and fitness activities of the morning were completed; walkers, runners, friends and families enjoyed the warm Spring Weather with some of the delicious refreshments on offer and listened to the sounds of local artists, Prime Circle and Jo Black.
Jacaranda FM and Discovery’s aim of making people healthier one step or run at a time, is needed more than ever across the country. And whether it was about achieving a personal race best, making it across the finish line, spending a great day outdoors with family or listening to more music you love, a great day was had by all who attended this year’s Spring Walk.
