On 24 September, we’ll all have a good excuse to gather with friends and family to celebrate National Heritage Day. Also affectionately known as Braai Day, it’s a special annual holiday where we get to honour the South African heritage and be proud of our roots.

South Africans are known to be the best braai masters and we all love to hang out around our respective fires, celebrating our heritage,  even more so on this particular day. It is named many things: Chisa Nyama, Braai and uKosa to name a few.

So if you are prepping for your braai gathering and reside within the Umhlanga Rocks, Durban North or Springfield areas make sure you get the essential items you need to make your day by the fire a good one!

Top of the list is the menu. Pre-braai nibbles are super important, so to whet your guests’ appetites, serve a small selection of starters and snacks before the main event. Depending on how many guests you expect, stick to a small platter so everyone has enough space for lunch. Food Lover’s Market, situated at Springfield Retail Centre, and offers an array of fresh and wholesome food items for the main event. These range from salad ingredients, yummiest garlic bread, condiments, butternut which you can stuff with feta, mushrooms, spring onions etc. all the way to the finest cuts of meat that will be sizzled on the braai.

Outdoor Warehouse is also on hand to ensure that you have the best tools and accessories necessary to ensure your Braai Day is a major success. With the arrival of their newest store, Ackermans, you have no excuse not to look “braai cool”.

The Riverside Spar at Park Boulevard, under new ownership, offers a wide range of butchery-best meat, sides and snacks fit for a king. Paired with a quality beer or wine from Tops at Spar, your braai day will be well enjoyed.

Another festive and memorable way to celebrate Heritage Day would be to create some tongue and cheek awards at your braai. Visit Trophy Centre at Park Boulevard and have trophies engraved that could be handed out to the Braai Master King or Queen of the Grill, Super Salad Maker or Marvellous Mixologist. Their range of products will amaze you as they make custom trophies in Perspex, metal, wood, etc. Start that braai day tradition and keep it going for years to come.

And while we are celebrating our heritage, Granada Square Shopping Centre has got a fantastic Karaoke competition on the go, held at Angelo’s every Sunday from now until the 25th October, from 4-7pm. If you have what it takes, why not give it all you got by entering the competition. Be original and belt out a proudly South African song. There is R5 000 up for grabs, so don’t miss out.
