The exponential growth in COVID-19 cases in South Africa and the world has necessitated extraordinary measures and modes of treatment.

Our healthcare system has taken a huge strain over the past few months with temporary facilities been setup, and then reaching capacity within a few days.

Communities and businesses throughout the country are assisting where they can, to help fight the pandemic and a group of doctors from Greenside, Johannesburg: Dr Y Hassim, Dr S Bulbulia, Dr S Dhoodhat, Dr Z Dadabhay, Dr A Mosam, Dr N Kajee, Y Mahomed, B Takolia, Dr S Wadee, Dr H Pahad, Dr N Motara, Dr Z Valli, Dr N Alekar, have recently got together to form the GO2 (Greenside O2) COVID-19 response initiative.

The initiative is a community driven project in conjunction with medical doctors, allied health professionals, non-profit organisations like the Islamic Medical Association, and the community.

GO2 aims to provide oxygen therapy and care to patients in need at home, and will initially serve the communities in the following areas: Greenside, Emmarentia, Victory Park, Linden, Roosevelt Park, and Montgomery Park.

According to GO2,

"We are hoping to address the shortage of hospital beds, by offering comprehensive home treatment. This will cover mild to moderate illness; patients who may benefit from oxygen but are unable to get a hospital bed; patients who are discharged prematurely from hospital due to bed shortages and even severely ill patients who may need support while waiting for hospital beds.

We will do this through a number of avenues
• Information for the community
• Co-operation with GPs
• Co-operation with local pharmacy (one stop package available for mild cases)
• A panel of supporting specialists (specialist physicians guiding treatment)
• The provision of home oxygen therapy, nebulisers and personal protective equipment for home use."

GO2 is appealing to the community for support to get the project off the ground.

"Buying the equipment, we will need will cost money, we are entirely dependent on the generosity of donors. Each oxygen concentrator costs in the region of R10 000. Additionally, we need to procure personal protective equipment (PPE), disposables, nebulizers"

In addition GO2 is seeking the assistance of volunteers to aid with logistics and transport, those who are interested should contact Imasa.gauteng@gmail.com or Go2community@yahoo.com
