This Women’s Month, South Africa’s favourite female rock group is celebrating womanhood with the release of a brand-new single, which fans have been looking forward to for quite some time.

REËNWEER falls just as nicely on the ear as a blissful rainstorm on the roof and was written, during the first five weeks of the lockdown, by SAARKIE’s lead singer – Adelè Fouché. “During lockdown, the sound of traffic was replaced by peaceful night noises,” the girls reveal about the inspiration behind the song. “Everyone wants someone close to them. Lockdown has shifted our focus to the things that are more important than the hustle and bustle of daily life.”

The track builds on the unique rock sound that the trio is known for and is one of those songs that forces you to stop and listen when hearing it for the first time. “Everyone likes to cuddle when it rains. It’s nice to be close to someone you like when the dark clouds set in,” they explain. “The song should take listeners back to the first few weeks of lockdown; when no alarms were set, the sound of nature was all that could be heard at night and you had time to cook with the person you love. To any good memory during this time.”

SAARKIE, who is celebrating their eleventh year in the music industry, consists of three talented musicians - Adèle Fouché (lead singer, guitarist, harmonica player and songwriter), Lila Botha (drummer and backing vocalist) and Mjön van Blommestein (bassist, harmonica player, ukulele player and songwriter) - and is described as one of the best rock groups to ever grace the local stage.

They are known for their energetic electric acoustic style and have been nominated for various Ghoema and SAMA Awards throughout their career, including Rock Album of the Year, Best Album by a Group or Duo and Group of the Year.

The release of REËNWEER is just the beginning of many new and exciting things for SAARKIE, who shares that they have been spending this ‘quiet time’ by writing new songs, doing live concert recordings and more. An exclusive range of Saarkie merchandise will also be available soon. “Lockdown treated us very well. Although it is frustrating at times, it is also a wonderful opportunity to find yourself again and take on new challenges,” says the trio.

Fans are definitely relieved that Adèle, Lila and Mjön are back in the spotlight and with REËNWEER they once again confirm why they have already had such a big impact on the South African music industry. One cannot help but to feel excited about what the Saarkies are planning for the future... so watch this space!
