Two of the most coveted titles in South Africa to be decided at the home of motorsport
Volkswagen Polo Cup and Global Touring Cars (GTC) SupaCup racing will return to the home of South African Motorsport for the first time in 2021 when the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit will play host to the grand finale between 2 and 4 December. Both title fights are still undecided with a number of talented drivers still in with a chance to claim two of the most coveted titles in South African motorsport.
The scene is set for two separate championship battles of epic proportions as both the Volkswagen Polo Cup and (GTC) SupaCup titles will be decided at the spiritual home of motorsport. It will be the first and only time that the historic Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit will host these racing series in 2021 and as a bonus, international eyes will also be on our drivers as both the Polo Cup and SupaCup races will serve as the curtain raisers for the famed Kyalami 9-Hour race taking place on the same weekend.
“We couldn’t have asked for a better season finale for both championships,” commented Mike Rowe, head of Volkswagen Motorsport. “Both titles are still undecided and it is going to be a memorable occasion for whoever claims the grand prize after the weekend’s racing.”
The man with the big target on his back in the Volkswagen Polo Cup title fight is Leyton Fourie who leads the chase on 250 points after claiming no less than five race victories in 2021. His points lead has decreased to only 17 after title rival Jurie Swart won both races during the previous round at Zwartkops. With two races on the cards at Kyalami and 20 points awarded for a race win and additional points available for pole position and fastest laps, it will be impossible to predict who will emerge as the champion. Mathematically, third placed Arnold Neveling is also still in with a chance. Clinton Bezuidenhout looks set to secure fourth place on the points table ahead of young drivers Jadyen Els and Nathi Msimanga.
The battle for SupaCup honours will be just as fierce. 2020 champion Bradley Liebenberg is the favourite to retain his crown, but Volkswagen Motorsport driver Jonathan Mogotsi has been on superb form during the latter part of the season and will no doubt take the fight to Liebenberg at Kyalami. Both these drivers cannot afford a mistake as multiple Polo Cup Champion Jeffrey Kruger is also still within striking distance, just 25 points from the lead. Jason Campos seems safe in fourth, ahead of Saood Variawa.
“Besides fighting for titles and championship positions, all these drivers will also have an opportunity to showcase their talents to an international audience who will have eyes on Kyalami over the race weekend,” added Rowe. “This could be the biggest race to date in many of these young driver’s careers. South African drivers have however showed that they are more than capable to take on the challenge and we at Volkswagen are very pleased that we are in a position to help these drivers nurture and further develop their talents in both the Volkswagen Polo Cup and SupaCup,” he concluded.
As always, fans that cannot make it to Kyalami will still be able to follow all the action live on Volkswagen Motorsport’s social media platforms. Practice sessions for both categories are scheduled to commence on Thursday morning.
