Ugu South Coast Tourism (USCT) members welcomed the increase in visitor numbers across the hospitality and retail sectors, with holidaymakers enjoying the coastal activities and various cultural excursions on offer.

“This year’s well-organised Summer Sizzle programme, which ran 13 December to 5 January, was extremely well supported at the various beach and hinterland locations, and the targeted marketing of this beautiful region ahead of the season certainly achieved the required impact,”

said CEO of Ugu South Coast Tourism, Phelisa Mangcu.

“We also launched the incredibly user-friendly ‘Explore KZN South Coast’ app which highlighted the area’s USCT member establishments and ongoing events – all through a free download. The overall feedback from all holidaymakers was extremely positive and a really great start to a productive 2020.”

Alongside the satisfied holidaymakers was the praise emanating from those in the hospitality and retail sectors. Commenting on her Facebook page ‘Margate is Magic’, one KZN South Coast establishment owner and well-known community member - Madelein Stopforth - said this had been a ‘bumper year’ for both the Margate CBD and the South Coast:

“For the first time in 5 years, all 26 units in our complex were fully booked…Margate CBD was packed and it was a multi-cultural cosmopolitan town where everybody got along!”

In addition to accommodation owners celebrating full rooms and happy customers, retailers were also rewarded with an increase in visitor numbers. Shelly Centre was up 647 268 in 2019 from 640 598 in 2018 despite tough economic conditions, while the South Coast Mall saw a 5.8% increase in foot count.

Prabashni Govender, of Green Chilli restaurant, said they’d noticed a definite increase in visitor numbers over the festive season, with many people travelling from North West and Gauteng to the KZN South Coast:

“I think the word-of-mouth advertising has really helped, with people talking about what’s on offer, as well as the fantastic beaches. Everyone was here to enjoy themselves.
