Unleash Your Sewing Skills with the Comic Con Africa Sew-a-thon

Prepare yourself for the return of the electrifying six-hour Sew-A-Thon event, culminating in an intense showdown at Stadio School of Fashion on 3 June 2023.
With entries closing soon, the Sew-A-Thon participants will receive a detailed briefing with only days to prepare prior to the event.
In partnership with Brother South Africa, Kirsch Stein & Co., as well as Stadio School of Fashion – the Sew-a-Thon 2023 will showcase the talents of beginners, intermediates, advanced sewists, and cosplayers as they battle it out in a thrilling mystery challenge, competing for extraordinary prizes.
Armed with their challenge, contestants will have the opportunity to cut patterns and complete their mood boards before the competition. At the event, they will face the task of bringing their garment to life and showcasing it to win their share of prizes valued at over R30 000.
This all-encompassing challenge for sewists will be evaluated by expert judges based on criteria such as precise and uniform stitching, correct tension application, finishing techniques, and machine settings.
“The Sew-a-thon is such a great opportunity for cosplayers to stretch their creative skills. We’re very excited to see the amazing talent at this, the third Brother Comic Con Sew-a-thon. The collaboration between Brother and Comic Con Africa is one that brings our innovative products to a whole new audience. Especially with spin-off partnerships such as the one with Ludus Cosplay, last years’ international cosplay Championship winner. It’s an exciting time and we are thrilled to associate our brand with Comic Con Africa.”
Says Angelique McGrath, Marketing Specialist for Brother International South Africa.
“The Sew-a-thon is a wonderful opportunity for both seasoned and new cosplayers to come and show-off their creative talents. Cosplay is a wonderful opportunity to bring the fictional to life, the only limitation is your own imagination. Our lecturers will be present during the day to mentor contestants every step of the way, turning their ideas and designs into reality. At SSOF this is what we do best, nurturing creative talent through the patternmaking and sewing process to turn good ideas into great garments.”
Says Terese Potgieter Discipline Leader Design Department
Contestants can enter the Sew-A-Thon by paying an entry fee of only R175.00, granting them a chance to secure a position in the top three and win remarkable prizes, while others will have the opportunity to receive spot prizes.
Bringing their expertise to the table as judges are menswear design and fashion label owner Roman Handt, Cape Town based cosplayer CashmereTart, experienced Stadio School of Fashion lecturer Terese Potgieter, as well as cosplayer and Comic Con Cape Town Regional Needlework Champion Creative_Chia.

About Kirsch Stein & Co.
Established in 1946, with over 70 years’ worth of experience in the clothing and textile industry, Kirsch Stein & Co is today one of the leading suppliers of fabrics in South Africa. Our reputable brand is widely respected in the national market, and we are the first port of call for inspired and well-skilled tailors who deliver only the best quality suits and trimmings to their valued clients.
Our first store was in the fashion district of Johannesburg, in Troye Street. Here we started with primarily suiting and trimming fabrics as our focus was solely based for the tailoring market. We became agents for Holland and Sherry and Huddersfield Cloth coupled with our own developments under the Kirsch Stein brand.
Our diversification into new lines of fabric has lead to the opening of a new, 3000 square meter fabric warehouse in Johannesburg’s vibrant hub of Fordsburg The opening of the warehouse and distribution centre in 2012 marked the beginning of a new chapter for the company, and we continue to grow in this exciting and ever changing market.
We travel extensively, and continuously explore new ideas. Our creative, insightful and experienced sales reps not only give us exceptional coverage of the geographical area in which we work, but also constantly develop new lines to meet the needs of our customers.
