Come and witness their magic at ‘Journey Beyond’ taking place on the 17, 18 and 19 August at the Artscape Theatre in Cape Town.

“While we can appreciate the strength of men performing jumps, push ups and pull ups, it is difficult to understand how strong women are when they make everything looks effortless,”

says Laurence Estève, Zip Zap Co-founder and CEO.

“53 percent of Zip Zap’s beneficiaries are female.”

“Climbing ten meters of soft fabric, hanging from one hand from a metal bar at eight meters, splitting, rolling, balancing elegantly, our ladies do this all with pointed toes and smiles; all while synchronised with the music,”

says Estève.

“They make it seem like the most natural thing to do; until you see these girls train for hours, overcoming tiredness and relentlessly continuing and supporting each other with the goal to produce the most magical emotion for the audience to feel.”

The girls at Zip Zap have developed trust, teamwork and discipline which enable them to perform on stage. Think of them as Picasso painting with bodies, as Newtown defying gravity, they are ordinary kids doing extra-ordinary things. Some of the female performers that you can see in Journey Beyond include: Inathi Zungule in her first production, Saskia van Rensburg in her last production before studying politics in France, Johanna Gorzellik who is able balance on one hand longer than you on one foot, Robin Botha’s crystal voice, Isobel Rossouw’s elegance, Jade Palmer’s vigor, Kayla-J Aucamp’s lightness, Izzy Ellman’s strength, Kiki Schelling’s control and their youngest performer in the show Talya Ellman’s biggest smile. Without forgetting our wardrobe team Portia Kewana and Belinda Weeber and amazing choreographer Adele Blank always in the background.

“At Zip Zap, not only am I surrounded by the strongest, most hardworking team of young ladies (who are breaking the stereotypes of what women “can and can’t do” without even knowing it), but also by a team of young men who are fabulously inclusive, and treat us all as equals,”

says Saskia van Rensburg.

“We lift each other up (literally and figuratively), we support one another, we laugh, work and learn together, and not even once is our gender a contributing factor to any training session or rehearsal. In fact, in all my experiences as a toddler, teen and young adult I have never been in an environment that cares less about whether we tick the ‘male’ or ‘female’ box. It is empowering,”

says van Rensburg.

“Our rehearsals for Journey Beyond reflect on these feelings of inclusivity, equality and teamwork. We are all working just as hard as the person next to us, we are skilled in our craft, we are critiqued when necessary and commended when deserved, we all help with prop changes and equipment repairs, we warm up together, we sweat together and we bask in the feeling of pure delight of an audience-ready show that is the product of hours of dedication, repetition and passion.”

“Women power, women diversity, women gentle strength, women determination will conquer all. Do not miss Journey Beyond where all is possible and where you will be proud to be South African,”

says Estève.

About the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra
The Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra is arguably the most versatile and active orchestra on the continent of Africa, contributing handsomely to Cape Town’s global status and appeal. Founded in 1914 as the Cape Town Municipal Orchestra, the CPO is financially and culturally sustainable, attracting some of the leading international artists of our time. A multi-functional orchestra, the CPO delivers a world-class orchestra service to all communities in the region, participating in festivals and concerts across all genres of music. Apart from regular symphony concerts presented in the historical century-old Cape Town City Hall, the CPO also performs with Cape Town Opera and Cape Town City Ballet, adding up to a staggering 140 performances per year. It has several award-winning recordings for various European labels to its name, and recently returned from a highly successful concert tour of the United States of America. The orchestra runs a vast outreach and community programme that includes two youth orchestras and grassroots training projects in various townships around Cape Town. Many of the young musicians it trains are beginning to take their place on the concert hall stage.
