As French Language Day is celebrated globally on the 20th of March, it's the perfect opportunity to dive into the world of "la langue française."
Whether you're planning a romantic getaway to Paris, a culinary adventure in Lyon, or a scenic retreat in Provence, mastering a few key French phrases can significantly enhance your experience. In celebration of French Language Day, Air France shares some essential expressions that will help you navigate the beauty of France with ease and confidence.
1. Bonjour – Hello: This simple greeting is the cornerstone of polite French society. More than just a word, it's a gesture of goodwill. Use it to greet shopkeepers, waiters, and locals from the moment the city wakes. It's your first step towards forging genuine connections in this beautiful country.
2. Merci – Thank you: Perhaps one of the most powerful phrases in any language, expressing gratitude with "merci" is essential. It reflects not only your manners but also your appreciation for the French way of life. Whether someone has provided directions, served you a meal, or helped you in any small way, this word leaves a lasting impression of respect and thankfulness.
3. S'il vous plait – Please: This phrase is the golden key to polite request in France. It softens demands and shows that you are mindful of the French etiquette. Whether you're asking for a croissant at a bakery or seeking assistance, adding "s'il vous plaît" is a sign of respect that is always appreciated.
4. Excusez-moi - Excuse me: Navigating the bustling streets of Paris or getting the attention of a waiter in a busy café, "excusez-moi" is incredibly versatile. It’s your polite way into conversations or out of crowded spaces, making it an indispensable part of your French vocabulary arsenal.
5. Où est…? - Where is…?: This phrase is a lifeline for travellers. From finding landmarks to locating essential services like restrooms or metro stations, "Où est…?" opens up a world of exploration. Pair it with a smile, and you're likely to not only find your way but also engage in delightful interactions with locals.
6. Parlez-vous anglais? - Do you speak English?: While you're immersing yourself in French, this phrase can be a bridge when you need more complex information or are in a tricky situation. It's a respectful nod to the native language before transitioning to English, often leading to more helpful and patient responses.
7. Combien ça coûte? - How much does it cost?: France's markets, boutiques, and cafes are full of treasures. This question not only helps you navigate purchases but also engages you in the local commerce and culture, offering a peek into the French way of life and its values.
8. Je ne parle pas français - I don't speak French: Honesty is valued, and this phrase is a humble admission of your linguistic limitations. It often earns you appreciation for trying, and locals might switch to simpler French or English, ensuring better understanding and assistance.
9. Au revoir - Goodbye: This is not just a farewell; it's a warm way to express hope for future meetings. It signifies the end of an encounter but leaves room for more, embodying the French perspective on relationships and social interactions.
Immersing yourself in the French language doesn't just open up the doors to more authentic interactions; it shows respect for the rich traditions and heritage of France. With a commitment to excellence in service and a focus on promoting French culture, Air France strives to provide passengers with an exceptional travel experience. Before embarking on any French adventure, these phrases will not only serve as a linguistic toolkit but also as a bridge to the essence of French society. Bon voyage!

Regular visitors to Crocworld Conservation Centre in Scottburgh need not be alarmed to note that the daily croc feedings have halted from 12 to 20 March.
The crocodiles are on a short diet that will stimulate their appetites ahead of the cooler winter months.
“Naturally in the wild, crocodiles don’t get fed every day or week, so this short break is an important way to build up their appetites again and stimulate them to have a better feeding response,”
explained Crocworld Conservation Centre Manager, James Wittstock.
“We will still have lots of daily activities for visitors to enjoy at Crocworld, and the daily feeding demonstrations will resume on 21 March ahead of the Easter holidays.”
Nile Crocodile Fast Facts
1. A crocodile’s metabolism is so evolved that its body uses and stores nearly all the food it consumes, which means, in extreme situations, larger crocodiles can go for over a year without eating a meal.
2. Crocodiles have very adaptable diets, ranging from birds and fish to larger mammals. During difficult times, they will even scavenge for carrion or consume almost anything they encounter to survive.
3. There are many differences between alligators and crocodiles but one is their smile. When a crocodile closes its mouth, two mandibular teeth are visible but alligators have no teeth visible.
4. Crocodiles have clawed feet and webbed hind feet which make them fast in water and on land. They can reach speeds of 17kh/h in water using their feet and powerful tail.
5. In addition to being a powerful rudder in the water, the crocodile’s tail will also store fat during droughts.
Crocworld Conservation Centre’s Daily Demonstrations (12 to 20 March)
WILD Park After Dark Easter Scavenger Hunt
Another egg-citing event taking place at Crocworld Conservation Centre on Friday, 29 March from 5pm is the first every WILD Park After Dark Easter Scavenger Hunt run by outdoor education group WILDED.
There will be face painting and fun activities in between! There will also be glow-in-the-dark items for sale, as well as boerewors rolls, snacks, and beverages for the whole family. Participants are encouraged to bring a basket to collect Easter eggs and get to Crocworld Conservation Centre at 5pm to register. Tickets are available at the door for R100 per person, or R80 per person for families of four or more.
Grab a bite!
Visitors can also head to Fish Eagle Café, within Crocworld, which boasts great food and drinks in one of the most scenic settings. The exquisite sea view from the café’s wraparound deck gives visitors the chance to watch playful dolphins as well as migrating whales while enjoying a great meal.

Image supplied by the City Lodge Hotel Group
This year, Ramadan begins on the 12th or 13th of March and ends on the 11th or 12th of April, depending on the sighting of the moon, marking a time of spiritual growth and community bonding.
To ensure our Muslim guests are comfortable and catered for while travelling during Ramadan, City Lodge Hotels has put together a special Suhoor Breakfast offering. Guests staying at any Courtyard Hotel, City Lodge Hotel, Town Lodge, or Road Lodge can order their Suhoor Breakfast tray from reception the day before, for collection from 4am in the morning for their pre-dawn meal.
The Suhoor Breakfast tray is R150 per person at Courtyard Hotels, City Lodge Hotels, and Town Lodges, and R110 at Road Lodges, and consists of muesli, plain or flavoured yoghurt, mixed dried fruit, mini sliced fruit platter (consisting of sweet melon, paw paw, and grapes), glass of fruit juice, whole fruit, Jungle Bar, and a filled croissant with either chicken mayonnaise, cheese and tomato, or tuna mayonnaise.
“We are reminded of the values of peace, compassion, and unity that this holy month represents. Regardless of our faith or beliefs, may we all strive to embody these values in our daily lives and work towards a more peaceful and harmonious world for all,”
says Lindiwe Sangweni-Siddo, chief operating officer of City Lodge Hotels.
]]>In the past few years, Ugu District has attracted a significant number of tourists during the festive season – and according to local establishments, the 2023 figures indicate a similar pattern.
This bodes well for the KZN South Coast with the Easter holidays around the corner!
“The occupancy rates are a very positive indicator of our growing tourism economy, and the fact that the KZN South Coast is offering visitors what they want – a nature-based experience which is affordable for the whole family,”
commented Deborah Ludick, Acting CEO of South Coast Tourism & Investment Enterprise (SCTIE).
“Reports from our bigger tourism establishments between Christmas and New Year indicated 100% occupancy rates. This is particularly significant considering the high rainfall experienced over December, something we believe is a testament to our diverse tourism assets and welcoming environment.”
Ludick said KZN South Coast’s subtropical climate meant visitors did still get to enjoy the region’s Blue Flag Beaches and tidal pools – the highest number in KZN – as well as its world-class dive sites and riverside water sports.
“While many come for our beaches, visitors soon realise they are spoilt for choice with everything from hiking excursions and extreme adventures in the hinterland, to township tours and cultural experiences. The Golf Coast, as it’s known, is a golfer's dream with 11 courses on offer. There is also the latest Wellness Way route and the Mission Tourism Route catering to all tastes in the Paradise of the Zulu Kingdom.”
Tourism establishments note positive performance
Corné Alberts, Group Marketing Manager for ANEW Hotels & Resorts said ANEW Resort Ingeli Forest near Harding experienced a ‘positive performance’ with the majority of guests visiting from inland provinces.
“Despite the lingering effects of the pandemic, we observed a steady year-on-year increase, indicating a strong post-COVID recovery with an increased occupancy rate in 2023 compared to previous years. However, it's essential to acknowledge that the growth has been somewhat tempered by factors such as increased fuel and living expenses.”
She noted the natural beauty of the KZN South Coast, as well as its beaches, diverse wildlife, and scenic landscapes, as ‘major drawcards’:
“Additionally, the region's cultural heritage, vibrant local communities, and a range of recreational activities such as water sports and nature trails contribute to its appeal. Feedback from guests has been overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing satisfaction with our services, facilities, and the overall experience. The positive sentiment bodes well for future visits, indicating a likelihood of return visits.”
Leonard Gomo, General Manager of Margate Sands also noted an increase on previous years’ occupancy rates:
“We enjoyed a 6.5% increase from last year’s occupancy of 89.18%. The majority was retained business with visitors happy with the assurance that load-shedding and water shedding would not ruin their holidays, plus the abundance of Blue Flag beaches found here.”
Michael Bester of One Way Productions, tasked with running the free-to-attend Let's Go Summer 2023/24 programme at KZN South Coast beaches, said the weather was challenging on days, but visitors still came out in their numbers to participate.
“With the current economy and our tourism offerings, we are a first-choice holiday destination. Our gorgeous beaches, golf courses, affordable accommodation establishments and great entertainment venues put us at the forefront of holiday choices. Our beaches were clean and open over the summer season, and even with challenging weather conditions, people could still have an amazing holiday on the KZN South Coast,”
said Bester.

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines is wasting less food on board aircraft thanks to artificial intelligence.
AI programs enable the company to better predict how many passengers who have booked will actually board a flight. This allows the exact number of required meals to be calculated and KLM achieves up to 63% less food waste based on the expected number of passengers per flight. On an annual basis, this amounts to a saving of more than 100,000 kg of meals.
“Investments in digital technology are a priority for KLM. The application of artificial intelligence contributes enormously to improving our flight operations and making them more sustainable. Combatting food waste is a good example of this, resulting in tens of thousands fewer meals being wasted on our flights each year,”
says Marjan Rintel, CEO and President of KLM.
KLM is working on using artificial intelligence to determine the number of meals on board to help combat food waste. Not all bookings made result in a passenger on board a KLM aircraft. Depending on the class, between 3 and 5% of booked passengers do not show up (on time) for the flight.
The latest AI model (TRAYS) is the first model specifically developed for KLM’s catering activities. The AI model predicts the number of passengers on board based on historical data. The Meals On Board System (MOBS) receives the expected passenger numbers per flight with separate forecasts for Business, Premium Comfort and Economy classes. The prediction using the AI model starts 17 days before departure and continues until 20 minutes before the flight departs. This means the most accurate possible number of passengers is predicted for the entire catering process from purchasing to loading, thus preventing a surplus of meals.
The AI model TRAYS was launched at the end of last year by Kickstart AI. The initiative assembled talent from leading companies, including KLM, bol, Ahold Delhaize, NS and ING, to work on the development of this model.
“We are pleased that we have been able to make a valuable contribution to this important project for KLM. Our goal with Kickstart AI is to accelerate the adoption of AI in the Dutch business community and we look forward to working closely with Dutch companies to make this happen,”
says Sander Stomph (CEO en co-founder Kickstart AI).
A three-month analysis shows that 63% less food is wasted compared to catering for every booked passenger. The largest improvement can be seen on intercontinental KLM flights from Schiphol, where 2.5 fewer meals (1.3 kg) need to be thrown away per flight. On an annual basis, this amounts to a saving of 111,000 kg in meals across all KLM flights that are catered from Schiphol.
KLM is also working on the application of artificial intelligence in other parts of its business operations. For instance, AI is important in making aircraft maintenance smarter. In addition, AI programs are used to simulate predicted bad weather days, making it clear in advance which schedule would be best to allow flights to continue as much as possible. AI also helps customers by giving personalised travel tips after booking a flight.

Holiday fun at Crocworld Conservation Centre
Visitors descended on the KZN Mid-South Coast this festive season and took advantage of the epic holiday programme running at Crocworld Conservation Centre in Scottburgh.
There were daily crocodile and bird feedings, talks, and snake demonstrations to keep the whole family captivated.
A definite holiday highlight was the 123rd birthday celebration of one of Crocworld’s most famous residents, Henry the Nile crocodile.
On Saturday, 16 December, visitors celebrated this major milestone with free cupcakes and some time spent with the oldest known Nile crocodile in captivity. Crocworld’s on-site restaurant,
The Fish Eagle Café, was also buzzing with hungry patrons enjoying the best burger-and-view combination on the KZN South Coast.
]]>Big birthday smile for celebrity Nile crocodile
Holidaymakers and Crocworld Conservation Centre regulars flocked to the Scottburgh-based centre on Saturday, 16 December to celebrate the 123rd birthday of celebrity croc, Henry.
The oldest known Nile crocodile in captivity was honoured with a juicy piece of meat while party-goers enjoyed some free cupcakes. Visitors also stopped in to check out the centre’s second-oldest and second-biggest Nile crocodile, Colgate, who at 90-odd years is an impressive specimen himself! Crocworld’s Holiday Programme, which includes daily feedings and demonstrations, will continue until 17 January 2024, with great meals and drinks on offer at the on-site Fish Eagle Café.
]]>Safe tyres, safe journey
"The festive season is a time of togetherness and celebration, a time when we travel to see family or to go on holiday. But before setting out on the long journey home or on holiday, motorists should take the time to ensure their vehicles are safe. Particular attention should be paid to the vehicle’s tyres because, after all, it’s just that small area of rubber that keeps you on the road,"
says Willie Stander Bridgestone.
“Figures show that badly maintained tyres and rims are one of the main causes of road accidents in this country— before we embark on our festive-season travels, we all have a responsibility to ensure that our tyres are in good condition, for our own safety and that of others on the roads,”
Stander says.
“Making sure your tyres are in good condition and properly inflated could just be the best investment you ever make.”
Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) statistics show that of the major contributing factors to vehicle accidents, tyre bursts prior to crashing were the top one relating to vehicles. Tests by the Automobile Association show just how dangerous worn tyres are, and the association warns that South Africans just do not realise how important it is to ensure that their vehicles have sound tyres.
Here are some the actions all drivers should take to ensure their tyres are safe as we gear up for the festive season:
“We all have a responsibility to play our part in promoting road safety and ensuring that our tyres are in good condition is something we can and must all do,”
Stander says.
]]>“Let’s work together to bring the number of road accidents down over this period of extra busy roads.”

That message has never been more relevant than it is today. In 1961 Barbie took on three new careers, becoming a registered nurse, a ballerina and a flight attendant.
Now, almost 65 years later, Barbie and FlySafair are drawing back the curtain to show girls in South Africa that careers in aviation aren’t limited, and they can become engineers, pilots, air traffic controllers, work in airlines management and marketing, become a safety inspector, and so much more.
Barbie’s career line reinforces the brand’s purpose to inspire the limitless potential in every girl. Barbie has always been a trailblazer across various career fields. In the 1970's, Barbie took on a career as a Surgeon, at a time when few women were applying to medical school. In the 1980's she took to the corporate boardroom as CEO Barbie, just as women began becoming Senior Executives. And according to the U.S. Department of Commerce, in the 2000’s, with only 24% of today’s STEM careers held by women, Barbie has been a Computer Engineer, Video Game Developer, Mars Explorer and Robotics Engineer, just to name a few.
“We’re thrilled to be partnering with FlySafair to help show girls in South Africa that their opportunities are limitless. By giving them an expert view of the various careers that are available to them within the aviation industry, we hope to spark their interest in a career that they might not have been introduced to previously, inspiring the next generation of engineers, pilots and inspectors.”
Says Terusha Naidoo, Barbie Marketing Manager for South Africa.
The Barbie brand believes in spotlighting industry leaders who break boundaries to inspire the next generation of girls. As part of the initiative girls were invited to join short talks, demonstrations and engaging presentations from expert women at FlySafAir, who specialize in different fields. Their aim is to inspire and continue to lead the way by sharing their insight, expertise, journeys and unpacking their career fields, so the next generation can find their professional callings.
"We are excited to show the next generation just how wide the array of career opportunities that exist in the aviation sector is. For us, this partnership is a great way to inspire and nurture this next generation of talent and encourage more diversity throughout all departments. Although aviation is often perceived as a male-dominated environment, this is an opportunity to showcase the limitless possibilities that exist for women and girls in this sector. We are extremely proud of our staff who spoke and all those who didn't, as they are living examples and role models demonstrating that the sky is the limit for girls and women with an interest in aviation.”
Says Maryke Pienaar, Marketing Manager at FlySafair.

]]>Minor Hotels – a global leader in hotel ownership, operation and investment – actively continues to demonstrate its commitment to the burgeoning hospitality industry in Africa with offerings that align perfectly with current industry trends, including experiential travel, sustainable tourism, and the growing interest in African destinations.

With its regional operational offices based in Johannesburg, Minor Hotels is making waves signalling a strong commitment to the African continent. Its renowned brands in the region, Anantara and Avani, are familiar to an already appreciative and discerning audience of travellers not just from South Africa but from around the world. The group’s active pursuit of growth underscores Minor Hotels’ dedication to redefining hospitality in Africa, positioning it as a key player in the continent’s tourism sector.
Find your wild side
Minor Hotels’ impressive Southern African portfolio is as diverse as it is far-reaching and boasts 29 spectacular properties located in Namibia, Lesotho, Zambia (Victoria Falls), Botswana, Mozambique, Tanzania and Kenya. Among these gems are award-winning The Royal Livingstone by Anantara and Avani Victoria Falls in Livingstone, Zambia; the breathtaking Anantara Bazaruto Island Resort and Avani Pemba Beach Hotel in Mozambique caters to the corporate traveller; Avani Gaborone Resort & Casino in Botswana; Avani Windhoek Hotel & Casino in Namibia; and the charming Avani Maseru Hotel and Avani Lesotho Hotel & Casino in Lesotho. Additionally, the Elewana Collection, a curated selection of luxury lodges, camps, and boutique hotels in East Africa, adds a touch of exclusivity to the Minor Hotels experience.
Africa is experiencing a hospitality revolution
Lindi Mthethwa, Regional Director of Sales and Marketing in Africa, highlighted the economic value of Minor Hotels’ presence in Africa. She stated,
“Our commitment to the continent goes beyond providing exceptional accommodations in all of the 1234 rooms we have across our properties in the Southern African region. We are proud to contribute to local economies by generating employment opportunities and supporting the tourism sector. Across Africa, our hotels and resorts have created thousands of jobs, and our commitment to sustainable tourism ensures we benefit local communities.”
One of the hallmarks of Minor Hotels’ presence in Africa is its dedication to collaborating with local businesses, artisans, and suppliers. This commitment not only supports the local economy but also promotes sustainable tourism practices. By engaging with local partners, the hotel group is fostering a stronger sense of community and connection within the regions where they operate.
Where it all began…
Minor Hotels’ history dates back to 1967 when William Ellwood Heinecke, known as Bill, embarked on an entrepreneurial journey at the young age of 17. His vision and determination eventually led to the establishment of Minor Hotels, which has since grown into a global hospitality and lifestyle behemoth. Today, the company’s name pays homage to its humble beginnings and has become synonymous with excellence in the hospitality industry worldwide.
While Minor Hotels, may have a relatively low-key name compared to the alluring and exotic “Anantara” – which loosely translates to “water without end” in Sanskrit – this simplicity is a testament to its remarkable success story, showcasing how the group’s unassuming name belies its extraordinary achievements. At the heart of these achievements, you will find uplifting programmes and initiatives which are aimed at preserving and uplifting the communities and environments surrounding the hotels and resorts. These projects play a role in the recovery of tourism and sustainability is a big part of that.
Most recently the Minor Hotels in the region spearheaded the Victoria Falls Clean-up project and two scholarship programmes. In 2022 The Royal Livingstone Hotel by Anantara partnered with Sustainable Hospitality Alliance (SHA) and SOS Children’s Village Livingstone to run a six-month Youth Employment Programme on property. Fifteen vulnerable youths were selected for the first intake to be trained and given formal employment at the hotel. Anantara Bazaruto Island Resort and the Aujan Group Holding collaborated to form the Aujan - Anantara Scholarship Programme. This scholarship aims to provide youth from the local Zenguelemo, Pangaia and Sitone communities with access to college education upon completion of their secondary education. 10 students from the local Zenguelemo Secondary School were awarded scholarship opportunities and placed at Instituto Industrial e Comercial "Eduardo Mondlane" de Inhambane, in Inhambane City where they have been enrolled in a comprehensive hospitality course for a three-year period, with lessons covering theoretical hospitality foundation and English language classes. This focus on sustainability and empowerment which forms part of Minor’s DNA as a group, not only impacts tourism but the community as the hotels are key economic drivers in their region.
Minor Hotels continues to push the boundaries of the hospitality industry, and its commitment to Africa is a testament to its dedication to providing memorable experiences, supporting local communities, and promoting sustainable tourism in the region. Plans are underway for adding a brand-new product to the Minor Hotels portfolio - an ultra-luxury safari tented camp, which will be the first of its kind under the Anantara brand. Watch this space…

Winter may be here, but that doesn’t mean we have to halt any travel plans. On the contrary, winter serves as one of the best seasons for locals to become more acquainted with their country. From experiences in the V&A Waterfront to quad biking through Soweto, read on to see the ultimate beginner’s guide to exploring the cities of Jozi and Cape Town.
Image courtesy of Cape Town Kayak Adventures
Select the perfect homebase
The best way to kick off your trip is to ensure that your homebase is perfectly situated to explore the city you are in. For Cape Town, the Radisson RED V&A Waterfront is nestled perfectly in the world-famous V&A Waterfront, home to many attractions within walking distance.
Similarly, the Radisson RED Johannesburg Rosebank is in the bustling cosmopolitan hub of Rosebank, making it ideal for leisure travellers who want to make the most of a Jozi visit.
These hotels also provide a play on the conventional, with the aim of encouraging guests to “stay and play”.
Get the adrenalin pumping
While some may equate a traditional holiday to quiet days and spa treatments, there is so much opportunity to add adventure into your trip. Both Johannesburg and Cape Town are bursting with exciting outdoor activities suited to every traveller’s palate. Whether you are a full-on adrenaline junkie, or someone just testing the waters, both cities can accommodate your daredevil levels.
For water lovers, Cape Town Kayak Adventures offers an exhilarating kayaking experience around Battery Park in the V&A Waterfront. It serves as a safe and exciting activity for those of all ages. They are open year-round (weather permitting of course), and have dedicated guides along with you to ensure smooth sailing.
Need something a bit low-key? A pleasant e-bike tour around the city is a great way to take in the sights of the Mother City. These adrenaline filled activities and so many more can be booked with Up Front Concierge.
On the road to Atlantis, what may seem like small sandcastles in the distance are in fact vast dunes ready to be explored. Jeep Tours Cape Town provides travellers with specially curated sandboarding experiences, led by experienced drivers who know the Atlantis dunes like the back of their hands.
Quad biking and Johannesburg may not be words you thought would be in the same sentence, but the team at Honest Travel Experiences beg to differ. The Soweto Towers are famously known for their bungee jumping experience, but they offer so much more for travellers to explore the area of Soweto. A quad bike tour of the township is offered by guides, showing the rich cultural and historical sites that can be explored.
Have fun with food
It’s no surprise that food and drink tourism is on the rise, with a projection to grow another 16.8% by 2025 according to the World Food Travel Association. Countries all over the world have prioritised their gastronomical offerings, and South Africa is no exception.
In the City of Gold, you don’t have to look further than your homebase to experience the best of the culinary scene. The Radisson RED Rosebank has recently given its famous RED Roof menu a facelift by incorporating highly anticipated dishes familiar to most South Africans. Steak seared to perfection while drinking in the dreamy Jozi skyline isn’t the worst way to wind down your day.
If you’re in the mood for a home-cooked meal, the hotel also offers a Sunday “seven colours” table buffet every week. The meal includes hearty beef stew, flame-grilled chicken, creamed spinach, beetroot and more!
Learn more about the culture
Regardless of whether you are new to a city or were born and bred there, there is always something new to learn about the local culture. A great way to explore this is through the art around where you are staying.
In the trendy suburb of Rosebank, a walking tour is a fantastic way to become acquainted with the local art galleries. Another offering by Honest Travel Experiences, the tour includes a walk through the Keyes Art Mile by an experienced tour guide who has in-depth knowledge about the artists and their work.
All of the above serves as a great springboard for you to plan your holiday around. With a country so rich in cultures and experiences, when it comes to curating your next shot left, the world is your oyster.

The sunny winter weather continues to attract visitors to the KZN South Coast, but it’s not just the Blue Flag Beaches, nature reserves, and hinterland adventures that are getting attention – the world’s greatest biomass migration is still putting on a fantastic ocean display!
Image supplied by SCTIE
The Sardine Run, which is an annual winter phenomenon, got underway in June, and there are only a few weeks left to check out this globally renowned event.
“This year has been another great one for the Sardine Run on the KZN South Coast with tourists afforded close-up viewings of the migrating shoals and hungry marine life in hot pursuit!”
commented Phelisa Mangcu, CEO of South Coast Tourism & Investment Enterprise (SCTIE).
“There are so many ways to experience the Sardine Run, whether it’s from the sandy shoreline of our Blue Flag Beaches, from whale watching decks, from boats, microlights, or in the water, our tourism establishments are on hand to make this a memorable excursion.”
The pilot shoal made its appearance on the KZN South Coast early in June this year, with Sardine Run activity attracting eager anglers, divers, and spectators throughout the winter weeks. Wayne Harrison, Acting Head of Operations at KZN Sharks Board, said seine netters had been busy the past few days.
“Netting took place on Wednesday [26 July] at Kelso Station where 30 baskets were netted at R400 each,”
said Harrison.
“Netting took place in Scottburgh yesterday [27 July] with 30 baskets netted at Mamba Alley on Thursday morning, two more nets taken at Pumula, and another one at Hibberdene. So far, we’ve had 12 nettings in July, totalling 52 successful nettings this season, with just over 700 baskets taken.”
One of the seine netters, Demetre Stamatis, said the localised flooding earlier in the season had impacted the netting somewhat, but the same thing happened in 2022 and there was suddenly a ‘flash of run’ thereafter. While it’s impossible to predict the sardine activity, he said hopefully:
“Today could be a different outcome!”.
How to experience the Sardine Run
Visitors are welcome to look out for the Sardine Run action from any of the 58 beaches found on the KZN South Coast, home to the highest number of Blue Flag Beaches in the province! This time of year is also great for spotting migrating humpback whales, with any of this ocean activity seen from the many whale-viewing sites in the area.
There are several tourism operators ready to take visitors on a close-up experience of the Sardine Run. Charter boats will head out to the action where visitors can take in the spectacle from the boat, or even enjoy some snorkelling among the sardines, dolphins, and game fish.
Scuba divers and free divers can head to two of the best dive sites in the world, Aliwal Shoal and Protea Banks – both Marine Protected Areas. Protea Banks is ideal for shark sightings while Aliwal Shoal is ideal for all levels of diving experience with a series of caves, crevasses, and ridges home to a huge variety of marine life.
There’s also the option of an aerial view of the KZN South Coast with a flip in a microlight, helicopter, or light aircraft. World of Wings in Umkomaas offers microlight flips for views of Aliwal Shoal, Scottburgh and the lower South Coast; while the Margate-based Uvongo Airtrack Aviation offers scenic helicopter and aeroplane flights for a great view of the coastline.

As the nation honoured the legacy of Nelson Mandela on July 18th, hundreds of Southern Sun employees went out into their local communities to volunteer at the many projects that are regularly supported by the group’s more than 90 hotels and resorts in South Africa, Africa, Seychelles and the Middle East.
Drakensberg Resort staff at Umfolozi Creche
Heeding the call to clean, plant, feed and sustain, Southern Sun Volunteers took action in the spirit of the Mandela Day theme for 2023: Climate, Food and Solidarity – #ItIsInYourHands.
In a significant display of support for their local communities, a total of 565 Southern Sun employees volunteered at more than 50 different causes in South Africa, spending a cumulative total of 630 hours in volunteer efforts that ranged from packing meals, cleaning streets and beaches, planting food gardens and trees, painting and repairing creches, schools and animal shelters, hosting soup kitchens, and providing meals, linen and other essentials to shelters, clinics and homes for children, the displaced, and the elderly.
“Our hotel teams are active in their communities throughout the year, but particularly during Mandela month, when we join the rest of the nation in a collective effort to bring about positive change. While our support extends to causes working in the areas of health, welfare and education, being in the hospitality industry, we are particularly aware of the need to alleviate hunger and help communities become self-sustaining. When we conducted our Mandela month round-up for the group, this was the overarching theme among our volunteer efforts this year, and we hope to have made a positive contribution to those who really need it,”
said Southern Sun’s Candy Tothill, who heads up corporate affairs and marketing for the group.
By way of example, Southern Sun’s Sandton Convention Centre once again supplied the venue for Rise Against Hunger’s Johannesburg food packing event on Friday, 14 July 2023. In addition, among hundreds of other volunteers, 44 Southern Sun Volunteers prepped, weighed and sealed 47 boxes comprising 1,700 nourishing meals as part of 168,000 meals packed for distribution to under-resourced school children in the province. Meanwhile, in KZN, 18 volunteers from Cabana Beach Resort and uMhlanga Sands Resort joined the movement and packed 25 boxes consisting of 900 meals to help the organisation meet its national target of providing 2 million meals by the end of July.
Being the leading hospitality group in Southern Africa, a large portion of Southern Sun’s workforce comprises food and beverage professionals and chefs, and together with chefs throughout the industry, Southern Sun chefs supported the NPC, Chefs With Compassion, which was established by the South African Chefs Association (SACA) President James Khoza, who is also the Executive Chef at Southern Sun’s 5-star Sandton Sun hotel.
Tothill explains:
“Hotels provide ‘rescued food’ to the Chefs With Compassion sharehouse and this is delivered to hubs where volunteer chefs cook compassionately for their communities. We were pleased to have participated in this year's Chefs with Compassion #67000litres Mandela Day campaign, which successfully provided over 400,000 under-resourced people around the country with a nourishing cup or bowl of soup on Mandela Day.”
In keeping with the focus on hunger alleviation, 40 volunteers from Southern Sun The Cullinan, Southern Sun Waterfront, Southern Sun Newlands, SunSquare Gardens and SunSquare & StayEasy City Bowl joined 6,700 other volunteers at Ladles of Love to prepare food and needed items for children in Early Childhood Development Centres in impoverished communities. In Hermanus, Arabella Hotel, Golf & Spa hosted a soup station at the Kleinmond community centre, providing a warm meal to 100 displaced people; and near Cape Town, StayEasy Century City contributed 150 meal packs to the Melkbos Care Centre, providing much-needed relief to the hungry.
In the Eastern Cape, Garden Court King’s Beach held an appreciation high tea at the hotel for 60 caregivers from local old age homes and childcare centres and provided catering for their residents. Southern Sun The Marine provided meals and party packs to 40 children at the One Life Child Centre in Walmer and also donated stationery packs. Meanwhile, the nearby Garden Court East London extended their support to the Jika Uluntu Community Centre, where they not only provided hot dogs and essential care items but also donated linen to 75 children from under-resourced backgrounds.
In KZN on Durban’s Golden Mile, The Edward hosted children from Durban’s South Beach Shelter at a party in their park, serving hot dogs, chips, popcorn, sweets, and cooldrinks while gifting each child a special present to brighten their day. Further inland, volunteers from Drakensberg Sun Resort made a positive impact on the Mfolozi Creche and Wazamokuhle School for the disabled, helping with repairs to the building, restoring the vegetable garden, and donating groceries. They also provided linen for the hostel and donated and planted seedlings in a bid to assist with food security.
At the Vaal, the Riverside Sun team extended their support to Vukuzenzele Old Age Home by hosting lunch for 100 elderly residents and providing them with a nourishing meal in the company of others; while in Pretoria, Garden Court Hatfield supported Hatfield Christian Church by sorting donations at their warehouse ensuring effective distribution, and donated linen to those in need. The hotel also teamed up with a local supplier, CS Continental Market CC, and served 100 hotdog meals to displaced people in Arcadia.
Further assisting displaced people, in Gauteng, 54 on Bath and Southern Sun Rosebank supported the Immaculata Shelter for the homeless, preparing 50 backpacks filled with towels, hygiene products and daily essentials for the shelter’s beneficiaries who are also provided with skills training and help with documentation to help them get back on their feet with dignity; while Southern Sun Katherine Street donated groceries, 109 linen items and 20 litres of paint to Alexander Children’s Home, reinforcing their commitment to creating a positive impact on the lives of children in need. Garden Court Milpark arranged a day visit to the Children of Fire home, a charity organisation for child burn victims, where the team provided meals for 25 children and donated linen to the centre.
In Mpumalanga, Southern Sun and StayEasy Mbombela supported their local SOS Village by sponsoring playground games and play sand, providing the children with an opportunity for fun and play. The staff at Pine Lake Resort and Sabi River Sun Resort collaborated by contributing to Sozama Day Care in Hazyview, providing essential maintenance, painting, cleaning and repair work to the centre. The children of the Matafeni community were the recipients of linen items and they were served nourishing bowls of soup prepared by Southern Sun Volunteers from Sun1 Nelspruit.
Southern Sun Cape Sun assisted Zonnebloem Old Age Home with maintenance and a heartwarming lunch for the residents; while Garden Court Victoria Junction showed their commitment to a cleaner environment by conducting a litter cleanup at Prestwich, Somerset, Ebenezer, and Main Street. Garden Court Mthatha made a significant impact on Thembalihle Children’s Home by undertaking various projects, including painting, ceiling repairs, and providing essential supplies; and in Plettenberg Bay, Beacon Island Resort partnered with the Bitou Rugby club to clean and replant the vegetable garden at the Protea Community Centre, also providing fleece blankets for the elderly.
While many more organisations benefitted from the time donated by Southern Sun people during Mandela month, these efforts will continue throughout the year, as the Southern Sun employee volunteer programme enables people employed by the group to actively give their time and expertise to those living in less fortunate circumstances.
“Through our volunteers programme, the people of Southern Sun demonstrate caring spirits – in big and small ways – by identifying needs and getting involved in initiatives that uplift the lives of others, and this is demonstrated no more powerfully, than during Mandela month each year,”
concluded Tothill.

]]>The 2023 Ballito Pro Presented by O’Neill Festival, which encompassed sustainability, inclusivity, and growth, welcomed large numbers of holidaymakers to KwaDukuza shores for an epic seaside event that ran from 27 June to 9 July.
Alongside the many popular retail and entertainment activities on offer, this year’s festival brought a number of new programme additions to the 54th Ballito Pro.
“We’d like to extend our thanks to the host, KwaDukuza Municipality, our sponsors, partners, and all the festival attendees for one of the biggest and best Ballito Pro Festivals to date,”
said Collette Bundy, The Ballito Pro Presented by O’Neill Festival Organiser.
“It was through extensive collaborations that we were able to grow our festival programme, including a variety of sustainable elements that promoted ocean health and conservation – without which, there is no Ballito Pro. We look forward to continuing this trend of inclusivity and sustainability as we plan for 2024!”
Konke KuLuhlaza - Everything is Blue
This year’s theme Konke KuLuhlaza touched on the importance of ‘going green for the big blue’ with ocean conservation and inclusivity prioritised. This started with event hosts, KwaDukuza Municipality, which has adopted Coastal Development & Economic Tourism Strategies, including the KwaDukuza Coastal Management Plan, which ensures best practices, environmental education, sustainability, and beach safety through strategic plans for growth and economic sustainability. This includes launching its Blue Flag Beach programme, with Willard Beach one of three Blue Flag beaches in the area.
Another key partnership with the non-profit organisation (NPO), Ballito Urban Improvement Precinct (BUIP) has ensured water health with regular monitoring E.coli levels at all beaches and tidal pools from Salmon Bay to Tiffany’s Beach. BUIP, with the support of the municipality, is also raising funds to install a fourth access ramp to the beach, forming part of its Beach Access for All campaign.
Event sponsor, O’Neill, is also showing its commitment to conservation through its sustainable product collection – the O’Neill Blue. For the Ballito Pro Presented by O’Neill Challenger event, the O’Neill Blue event merchandise was manufactured from recycled cotton and polyester using a recycling process called Repreve. This is where plastic bottles from the oceans and landfills are converted into durable fibres to manufacture boardshorts. Throughout the festival, sustainable steps were taken such as the removal of single-use plastics, recycled polybags, and recycled material hangtags. O’Neill also supports global NPOs who align with the O’Neill Blue Ocean Mission including The Surfrider Foundation, Mauli Ola Foundation, Ocean Works, and Surfers Not Street Children.
Awareness Programmes
A further three local NPOs came on board at this year’s Ballito Pro Festival to educate and encourage ocean conservation. Litter4Tokens, founded on the KZN North Coast in Shaka’s Head by Clare Swithenbank-Bowman in 2015, encouraged festival-goers to collect nurdles – harmful microplastics found on the ocean shore – with 25 staff members also involved in cleaning up litter. More than 56 bags of litter were collected a day throughout the event, with a record set by Ballito Pro spectators who spent 10 hours a day collecting a total of 38.9kgs of nurdles. These are collected using Litter4Tokens Mermaids Tear Catchers (another name for nurdles) which is a dual sieve/frisbee which sifts through the sand. Participants were treated to prizes worth more than R50 000 for their environmental contribution.
The Litterboom Project (TLP), founded by Cameron Service in 2017, collects waste from rivers to prevent it from reaching the ocean. A thick pipe placed across the rivers can sift out huge amounts of waste – more than 500 000kgs to date – preventing it from becoming an ocean-bound problem. At the Ballito Pro, visitors supported TLP initiatives by competing in the Hunt Properties 5km run through Ballito on Friday, July 7. Image supplied by National Geographic
Sharkfest swims up to a massive month-long event with all-new content this July on National Geographic Wild
If you’re looking for the most authentic and comprehensive shark-viewing experience ever, look no further than National Geographic’s SHARKFEST. Sink your teeth into 72 hours of SHARKFEST programming, kicking off on 2 July on National Geographic Wild (DStv 182, Starsat 221). The go-to destinations for science-first shark content will take viewers up close and personal with the ocean’s apex predator.
With cutting-edge technology and industry-leading experts, SHARKFEST will entertain viewers with four weeks of explosive, hair-raising and celebratory shark programming that will showcase the captivating science, power, and beauty of these magnificent animals — because one week is simply not enough. With over 22 hours of original programming and over 50 hours of enhanced content, viewers will dive deep into the unpredictable psyche of sharks and their remarkable lives.
This year, SHARKFEST starts at home with a special filmed off the coast of South Africa. Around the world, reports of shark-on-shark attacks are on the rise. Now, off the country’s dramatic southern coast, a new hotspot has emerged — in Mossel Bay. Off the coast near Seal Island where great white sharks are known to chase and capture the furry mammals with breach-the-surface aeronautics, scientists have come upon a new theory as to what makes up most of the great white shark’s diet, and it’s not seals. In a ground-breaking investigation, Enrico Gennari and Lacey Williams lead a team of experts into the deep to capture conclusive evidence of sharks eating sharks! Shark Eat Shark premieres on Saturday 1 July at 18:45.
SHARKFEST will also explore the waters across the US in Cape Cod, Florida, Hawaii, New York, South Carolina and around the world in Australia, the Bahamas, Canada, Indonesia, the U.K. and more for a global underwater adventure.
Continuing its partnership with Minorities in Shark Sciences (MISS), which encourages diversity and inclusion in shark sciences and inspires the next generation of scientists, National Geographic’s SHARKFEST will feature new and familiar experts in this year’s programming. This collaboration lends MISS experts as on-screen talent and allows them to be consultants for the programming and development of the series.
View the trailer for Sharkfest 2023 here:
Expanding beyond the channel, two short films, produced by filmmakers in the Africa Refocussed program, a collaboration between NEWF (Nature, Environment, Wildlife and Filmmaking project) and the National Geographic Society, will be available on National Geographic Africa’s Youtube channel throughout the month:
AZILALI, THEY DO NOT SLEEP - This film by Faine Loubser depicts the journey through the life of a dark shy shark foetus. The film reveres the sacredness and mystery of the ocean, reminding us that the ocean is always awake and ready to connect with us.
BREAKING THE SURFACE: DIVERSITY IN THE OCEAN & MARINE ECOSYSTEM - The value of accessibility and knowledge of marine life are explored in in this short film. Featuring shark scientist Sophu Qoma, this film follows her research of Great White Sharks and reveals how the development of skills such as diving enabled her to journey down to the ocean and study this fascinating species.
Additional shark focussed programming will be available across Disney+ throughout July with plenty of awe-inspiring moments to enjoy and inspire.
National Geographic’s SHARKFEST hub, will be updated throughout the month to include enhanced content about sharks, including facts, photos and videos, quizzes and more, providing audiences with a better understanding of the ocean’s most misunderstood predator.
No-fin compares to National Geographic’s SHARKFEST, the go-to destination for advancement, scientific experts, and incredible shark discoveries. This year’s shark-infested line-up includes:
RETURN OF THE WHITE SHARK
Saturday 1 July at 18:00
Hundreds of great white sharks have recently appeared on the doorstep of one of America’s most popular tourist destinations, hunting in ways never documented before. To understand why the sharks are here and what this means for Cape Cod, a team of scientists are studying this new phenomenon to try to keep people safe. Are the sharks changing the natural ecosystem … or restoring it?
SHARK EAT SHARK
Saturday 1 July at 18:45
Something is amiss in the sharky waters of Mossel Bay, South Africa. Off the coast near Seal Island where great white sharks are known to chase and capture the furry mammals with breach-the-surface aeronautics, scientists have come upon a new theory as to what makes up most of the great white shark’s diet, and it’s not seals.
In Shark Eat Shark, shark scientists Enrico Gennari and Lacey Williams embark on a factual voyage with the help of Neil Hammerschlag to solve this predator-prey mystery, by casting a wide net of scientific experiments across the bay. The pair use camera tags and baited remote underwater vehicles (or BRUVs), skin samples and more, to try and capture concrete evidence that sharks are preying on other sharks. With a target area locked in as their playing field for the search, everything starts off promising. But even though the team believes they have every angle of the investigation covered, nature throws them curveball after curveball that threatens to jeopardize everything.
In the end, the team perseveres against all odds and are left with first-ever evidence of their theory that life in the waters off of Mossel Bay are a Shark Eat Shark world.
