Halaal Restaurants

Calisto’s - Fordsburg

If you are a fan of Portuguese cuisine and are looking for the ideal spot to dine and feast on a selection of chicken dishes and Espetada, then be sure to head down to Calisto’s. Their menu is packed with authentic Portuguese dishes such as Flamed Grilled Chicken Prego (R59.95), Espetada served with Milo Frito (R114.95) and Fillet Trinchado (R129.95). There are two branches in Joburg, one in Bedfordview and the other in Fordsburg. Calisto’s in Fordburg is the perfect branch if you are looking for strictly Halaal food and no alcohol. Booking is essential, so be sure to book your spot.

Adega - Fordsburg

Adega happens to be one of my family’s favourites. My sister and father usually tuck into the 1kg King Prawns Special (R189) which is smothered in garlic and butter sauce. Sadly my shellfish allergy will not permit me to indulge in such a tasty seafood delight (curses!), so I am forced to indulge vicariously though them. Adega offers a grand selection of Portuguese cuisine and is definitely a spot I will happily visit over and over again. The Fordsburg branch is strictly Halaal and due to the popularity of the restaurant, booking is essential.

Maharaja Indian Restaurant - Bryanston

This spot serves up Indian cuisine that is to die for! The menu is full of spicy authentic Indian cuisine, so you will not have to leave the country in order to get the best Indian food around. Lamb Korma, Prawn Vindaloo and Chicken Tikka Masala, they have it all! While the food here is strictly Halaal they do serve alcohol so if you are taking Muslim friends or colleagues along just make sure of their preferences before booking.

Jimmy’s Killer Prawns – Rosebank and Fordsburg

Whenever my family and I head down to the coast for our annual holiday, we always make a stop at Jimmy’s Killer Prawns. So, you can imagine our excitement when Jimmy’s Killer Prawns branched out to Joburg - it literally brought our holiday tradition home with us! The menu is packed with seafood dishes as well as a number of other options if you want something different or are cursed like me and cannot indulge in certain sea creatures. Both Jimmy’s Killer Prawns in Rosebank and Fordsburg are strictly Halaal.

Swad – Melrose Arch

If you are looking for some of the best Indian food in the city, then be sure to head down to Swad in Melrose Arch. All the food is strictly Halaal but they do serve alcohol on the premises. Their cuisine offers a number of unique flavours and dishes that has definitely brought India to Joburg. From the temperate flavours of Kashmir in the North to Kerala in the South and delicately spiced seafood from the East, there is certainly a dish and flavour for everyone.

Geet Indian Restaurant - Pretoria

With Indian cuisine that is both authentic and appealing, Geet Indian Restaurant offers a broad selection of exquisite Indian food that caters for every palate, no matter how hot or mild you like you curries. Their menu also offers a great selection of naan bread, vegetarian options, tandoori kebabs and an extensive list of curries to tantalise your taste buds. All the food is strictly Halaal, but alcohol is served on the premises.

Thava Indian Restaurant - Norwood

Thava in Norwood has to be my absolute favourite spot to get the best curries in Joburg. This spot used to be my second home and after drinking a few gallons of milk (to combat the spiciness of some of their certain curries) and surviving a few allergic reactions (damn you nut allergy!) I finally managed to try everything on the menu. It was definitely worth it! Thava in Norwood provides Halaal food items, but they do serve alcohol from the bar.

Europa - Parkview

Europa is a popular and well-known café that has a number of branches around Joburg. I have always enjoyed the crumbed chicken schnitzel served with a side salad and chips and an irresistible mayo chilli dipping sauce. Definitely a great place if you are looking to sit back and relax with a hot cuppa Joe and hearty homemade meals. Eurpoa Pakview serves strictly Halaal food.

Pride of India - Pretoria

Specialising in delicate North Indian cuisine, Pride of India Restaurant in Pretoria offers you a grand dining experience, offering a blend of traditional and innovative cuisine. Their menu boasts more than a hundred different dishes for you to try. The Indian cuisine is strictly Halaal but they do serve alcohol and have a superb wine list that has a number of options to choose from to compliment your meal.

Sitar Indian Restaurant - Cresta

Sitar Cresta is a great place if you want to experience authentic Indian cuisine in a fine dining atmosphere. They have an extensive menu of chicken, lamb and seafood dishes along with a great selection of vegetarian dishes and biryani. They definitely serve the best naan breads I have every tasted! The eatery serves select Halaal food items.
