Through its partnership with Land Rover, the South African Red Cross will now use Land Rover vehicles to distribute food parcels and continue to educate communities about the coronavirus.

The non-profit #FeedingSATogether initiative has already seen the delivery of 90 NUTRIWELL food packs to the Khyalethu School near Knysna, and with the help of the South African Red Cross Society (SARCS) a further 200 packs have been distributed to orphanages and old age homes in Soweto, Daveyton, Germiston, Brakpan and Benoni.

Jaguar Land Rover and Minnie Dlamini are now calling on any company, business or individual who is able to contribute to the cause, to donate to the campaign in order to extend the service to other areas.

Minnie Dlamini, Jaguar Brand Ambassador, said:

“Hunger is a daily battle in South Africa, even outside of the harsh circumstances many find themselves in at the moment. The lockdown period, although absolutely necessary, has shined a light on the fact that malnutrition and hunger is a massive challenge which has only been intensified by this pandemic.”

One NUTRIWELL food pack is normally priced at R250 and can feed a single person for up to one month. Its contents include vegetable soup, soya mince, instant porridge and nutritious instant shakes. For this initiative NUTRIWELL has made the packs available for a discounted price of R220, and each delivery also includes a hand sanitiser from Minnie Dlamini’s own line of personal beauty products.

Diageo South Africa, a leading spirits manufacturer, is providing the main ingredient (alcohol) in the sanitisers for free and has become the first major contributor to the initiative.

Sibani Mngadi, Corporate Relations Director of Diageo South Africa, said:

“We are proud to have partnered with the Minnie Dlamini Foundation, the Red Cross and Jaguar Land Rover to assist vulnerable communities during this trying time.

“We have donated 10 000 litres of alcohol towards the production of sanitisers. Over and above this donation, our employees have contributed a total of R125,000 towards purchasing food boxes that will be distributed to more than around 550 needy individuals through our employee volunteerism scheme, Valuing Each Other (VEO).”

Lisa Mallett, Marketing Director, Jaguar Land Rover South Africa, said:

“Jaguar Land Rover is proud to have initiated the Feeding SA Together project, and we are overwhelmed with the teamwork and support we have already seen from our ambassadors, partners and new friends such as NUTRIWELL and Diageo. Together we are able to reach more people and have a positive impact on isolated communities than we ever could have alone.”

Jaguar Land Rover, in cooperation with the Minnie Dlamini Foundation, has set up a Backabuddy platform where anyone can donate to the cause. All proceeds will be used only for securing additional NUTRIWELL food boxes, which will be distributed to those in need by the South African Red Cross. The Red Cross will identify the respective orphanages and old age homes where deliveries can be performed safely and are most needed.

Tina Pienaar-Smit, PR and Sponsorship Specialist, Jaguar Land Rover South Africa, said:

“This health emergency can only be overcome by cooperation on many levels. Together with Minnie we have developed an easy way for anyone to make a difference. We sincerely hope this initiative will meet at least some of the unprecedented demand for nutritious foods in various communities.”

Jaguar and Land Rover have deployed more than 300 vehicles globally to support emergency response organisations, including the Red Cross, during the coronavirus crisis. Land Rover and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) have worked together for over 65 years, helping communities prepare and respond to emergencies with disaster-preparedness projects around the world – vital at times like this.

In South Africa, 11 Land Rover vehicles have been made available to SARCS in its efforts to combat the spread of the virus. The focus of SARCS is on education in vulnerable areas as well as the distribution of protective gear such as masks and gloves, and now NUTRIWELL food packs and MD hand sanitisers.
