Remember 2010 when we all felt that football gees?

Thanks to that event and, of course, South Africa’s long love of the game, there is a massive soccer fan base in the country - many of which will be looking to replicate some sort of vibe when the games kick off within the next few days. If you’re looking for a place from which to watch the matches, we’ve got you covered.

Cape Town

Mitchell’s Scottish Ale House in the V&A Waterfront always screens the big sporting matches. From here not only do you get to view the games, but you get to do so while taking stunning views of Table Mountain. You can also head to Forrester’s Arms in Newlands to watch some of the matches, while Brauhus is always a vibe on sporting days at all of its locations across the Mother City.

Johannesburg

If you’re in Johannesburg and keen on catching a match or two, Radisson Blu Hotel OR Tambo will be screening the games while also serving up some delectable platters and snack baskets. The Central One Bar & Restaurant in Sandton is setting up a fan viewing zone for the period of the World Cup. Here, guests are able to enjoy a number of drinks and meal specials. One80 Pool Deck & Bar will have a big screen so that no one needs to miss out on the games.

At home

If you are keen on doing a viewing party at home, the games will be shown on SABC as well as in 4K on Supersport. If you are going to invite a few friends over for a watch party, here are four tips from Themba Ngwenya at Radisson Blu Hotel Gautrain on how to host the ultimate watch party.

  1. Ask people to arrive early

About 30 minutes before kick-off should be enough time. If you are planning to do a braai, ask your guests to arrive early. This way, you are able to banter with them and catch up before the game officially starts.

  1. Have a variety of snacks and eats

You might love biltong, but you could have vegan friends or people who are simply watching their meat intake. Have snacks to suit a variety of tastes. Think crudites, crisps, breads and spreads.

  1. Have a self-help drinks area

You might be the host or hostess, but it doesn’t mean you need to get up every ten minutes. If you set up a self-help drinks area it ensures that everyone is in charge of their own refreshments throughout the day.

  1. Plan activities for the kids

If some of your friends are bringing their kids with, set them up in a separate area or room with some fun activities. This could include a movie day with snacks, arts and crafts or outside with some lawn games.

Whether you are out and about or watching the games at home, be sure to relive the magic of when this tournament was on our front door by making each game you watch an occasion.
