The New Year means a fresh start for everyone, presenting a great opportunity to get on a healthier track.
This is particularly true for young children whose nutrition will directly impact their cognitive function at school.
In a recent SA National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (SANHANES) focusing on school lunches, it was revealed that South African children are consuming an unhealthily high quantity of sugar in the form of soft drinks.
The survey indicated that as many as two in three school pupils will consume at least two sugar-laden drinks per week. Each drink contains up to 55g of sugar which, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO), is 15g more than the daily recommended limit for children.
The impact of excess sugar in a daily diet includes weight gain, tooth decay and general health deterioration, but more than this, it affects a child’s ability to learn. A study by the University of California found that the high consumption of sugar is a likely culprit with in the deterioration of memory and cognitive damage.
“Correct childhood nutrition is so vital for both healthy physical and mental development,”
said Tea4Kidz Marketing Manager, Candice Sessions.
“We need to be providing our learners with the best possible tools for future success and this means healthy drinks at school and at home.”
Tea4Kidz, Laager’s range of Rooibos teas that is specially geared towards kids, provides parents with a healthier drink option for their young ones. Available in six flavours (including the new Tea4Kidz+ range with added Vitamin C), the beverage has all the associated benefits of Rooibos, including boosting immunity and relieving symptoms of allergies.
Ernest du Toit, spokesperson of the SA Rooibos Council, explained Rooibos is not only as effective as water for hydrating the body, it has additional health properties particularly beneficial to the developing body and mind.
“Rooibos is rich in antioxidants which help to protect healthy cells from damage, caused by free radicals, and can reduce the risk of a variety of diseases, including cardiovascular disease and some cancers. Rooibos also prevents DNA damage, inflammation and is helpful in combating diabetes. Added to this, Rooibos contains no caffeine, fats or carbohydrates, but rather vital nutrients such as Vitamin C, calcium, manganese and fluoride.”
In contrast to the harmful effects of sugar-filled soda and fruit drinks, Rooibos tea actually shield’s the child’s brain from stress, as well as protecting against lipid peridoxation – a process whereby free radicals damage brain cells and nerve tissues.
“We understand that parents are always trying to do the best for their children, and when it comes to healthy beverages, then Laager’s Tea4Kidz range is a really great option,”
“We’ve also put together a number of easy, delicious recipes for parents to try on our www.more4momz.com website, as well as helpful tips and useful information on childhood development.”
