to dear listeners. It's just past 200 p.m. in South Africa and it's the first
day and our favorite day of the week, Yomul Ahad. And it's the 16th of Jamal
Ora 14:47 ah which corresponds to Sunday the 7th of December 2025.
I'm Zad Plachis and with me are my co-hosts Nabia and Issa Plachis.
Welcome to Level Up, where we listen, learn, and grow, inshallah, with Allah
subhanahu wa ta'ala's guidance, and we break down the week's news and talk about what really matters to young
Muslims today. Our WhatsApp line is open. The number is 0727861548.
You can call in on 01854702
or DM us on i love at iilov.com. That's I L O V E Z A C O M.
Before we start, you my dad saw this quote and I'd like to read it because
it's to do with our program today.
Vacation isn't just travel. It's time in nature, guilt, free silence, sleeping
without alarms, eating slowly, disconnecting with the chaos to
reconnect with you. Shukran Issa for that. Yes, it is all to
do about vacations, about travel. And here in South Africa, we have actually
imanzified the last month in the Gregorian calendar. And we all know it. And I
think it's internationally known now as well as December.
Is it international to other people as well? December. Yeah. Everybody um in in the world knows
it as as December now. They actually uh use it in adverts and stuff because it's
it's well known. It's like a popular term. Okay. Okay. Um it's actually the the phrase is
actually K December. It's a South African phrase that means it's December.
Okay. Yeah. Uh but I think it it represents more than just uh um you know the month.
It's like a specific vibe. It's a whole lifestyle associated to this so-called
holiday season. Is so we live in South Africa where um it has to be switched off. Everything
has to be switched off by the time it's December. So that's why it brings that
whole vibe. But I think most of the shall we say
non-Islamic uh countries also switch off during this time of the year.
Yeah, they they do obviously because it's that so that holiday period. Um and
and this itself signifies like a period of festivities, relaxation,
um so-called celebration cuz people slow down from work. Um they travel to spend
time with their family and enjoy the warmer weather here in the southern hemisphere. So we have bri and
alhamdulillah we have beaches as well. So people get to enjoy those. Um and and
it's a it's a feeling. Uh December is more than just a month. It's a cultural
mood characterized by a lighter atmosphere, brighter sun, and social gatherings.
Okay. I think it's also a time for connection. The season involves traveling to be with family, attending events like nikas.
There's lots of nikas now in December. Yes. Everyone wants to get married when everyone's on holiday so that
you know they get the most sab and they get the most people in the masid with them for the nika to make dua for them.
Yeah. And um and then obviously there's uh f um festive events like brides that
happen as well cuz lots of people they close the kitchen. So um
that's a good feeling. Yeah. there's more there's more bri happening and people are going out as well. So they're having picnics, they're
having bri you know um so there's a lot of that and then obviously there's the
start of the so-called festivities end of year the feeling begins around December and extends through the holiday
period of January as well into the new year um often involving a significant
amount of travel within the country. So South Africa is is a country where um
obviously plane tickets are very expensive. So air travel is expensive and we love to travel here in South
Africa um within South Africa and across the border and a lot of our traveling is
done on the road. Yes. Like like most of the traveling by South
Africans are done by the road. It's cheaper. It's easier. Alhamdulillah we have very good road system as well.
You're not talking about the potholes in the roads. No, I'm talking about um
the way it's connected to the cities. Oh, okay. Um so, you know, it's it's it's easy
access from one city to the next uh to different towns. Yes, we do have potholes. We do have um you know, uh
roads that are not tred or whatever, but a lot of countries do. We are so-called
third world countries. So I think in terms of the infrastructure that we do have the highways and and all that it's
it's actually quite good. Alhamdulillah. And then um it's become South African
tradition. It's a unique cultural phenomenon with many people from outside South Africa acknowledging this special
festive energy called December. But most importantly, people look
forward to this month because like we said, they either travel home to see family or they spend some quality time
with their family. So over the next few weeks, we will be sharing some places to go and things to
do around South Africa from locals in our nine provinces.
Okay. So today we will also hear from listeners in the Kha region and the
northwest province of South Africa. We will be chatting about some of the free things that you can do or receive if you
were born in the months of December and January. And Issa will be sharing some travel tips. And if any of our listeners
have their own travel tips or things to do around the the place that they're
staying or the place that they're going to, the provinces that they're going to, then you'd like to share them, please
feel free to send them through to us on WhatsApp on 07278615481548
or you can send them on Instagram ones.com i o v e z a m. And it's not restricted
to South Africa only cuz we we know that we have listeners. Alhamdulillah, we have listeners all around the world. So
wherever you are in the world, you and you'd like to share things with us. Alhamdulillah. And we have we've had
listeners sending messages. I think one brother was from Ireland. Alhamdulillah. And then there was a sister from the UK.
So we have had, you know, like listeners from other places. And we'd like to hear from you as well. Um because I'm sure
there's there's lots to do in your area. Lot to do in your area. Yeah. So definitely tag us or DM us as well,
inshallah. Um so now we're going to hear from our very first special guest,
Sister Ana, who has a few familyfriendly places to visit in the region,
inshallah. Asalamu alaykum. This is Ana from Anenko. Over the years, I have been
trying to take my kids to lots of fun adventures around Johannesburg. And I'm going to share a list of fun places we
enjoy for you to enjoy over the December holidays. Starting with the toddlers,
there is Crazy Kids Farm in Ranburg, which is awesome. They have a lot of fun activities to do and you can feed a few
cute farm animals. There's also Happy Town and Hemley's in fourways. and be up in Cresta has this
really cute little toddler area there for them. With the bigger kids, there is Roly Goalie that's in Branburg as well.
There's Northgate Ice Ring. So, if they love throwing on any pair of skates, those two are good options. There's also
Be Up in Crest that has a lovely section for them. Bounce and Total Ninja. We also love to do some adventure golf, but
the one in Hillox especially has an awesome indoor area for smaller kids and
a lovely outdoor area for teens and adults. Monty Birdka Park is one of our
favorite spots. Then we also enjoy going to Gor City, but our secret is that we
book a night there because when you do that, you have 2 days of entry into Gor City. Sabono educational always fun to
pop into. Morropen caves is one of the different adventures we do especially if
they don't mind small spaces. It's really really interesting to go to. Play
in Ptoria is has a wide uh outside space for kids. Um the plus side is that it is
halal. There's also art and lots of pottery places to go to. Our favorite
pottery place is in London. There's also the cycle lab bike park and Seringa
Park. Seringa Park again for all ages. It has so many different play areas for
different age kids. Also has a pedal court for adults and a go-kart ring. So
that is a few places that we really really love to go to and I hope that you
enjoy them as much as we do. Alhamdulillah. such cool choices to go
to in and around Koutang region. Um, we've never ever been to Seringa Park.
Do you know that? No, we haven't. We've always been invited to these events or launch events. They had like a
reopening and then it was raining so they postponed it and when they postponed it, we couldn't make it. We
just could never get down to going to Sering Park. So, we actually don't even know what it looks like.
Yeah. And I believe there's quite a lot to do there. There's like go-karts and other things as well. Okay. So, inshallah, alhamdulillah,
shukr to Ana for sharing what you can do around the Koeng region, inshallah. And later on, we will hear about the
Northwest. But now, I believe Issa has a few travel trips that he would like to share with
us. Yes, these are a few of my travel tips
as a child who travels a lot. Alhamdulillah. Number
one, plan your day around your salah. Even if you do last minute road trips
like we often do without a clear destination in mind,
make sure that you check the route that you are taking for local musalas or
masids and salah times. Then plan your travel around those
places and times. If you are fortunate enough to travel by
plane, find out where in the airport that you are visiting is the Musalah as
most of them do have even a small prayer room. Alhamdulillah.
Number two, make a travel checklist and pack essentials including keithabs,
travel musalas and water bottles in case you unable
you are unable to reach a masid or musalah.
Number three, if you are traveling by plane, make sure to lock your bags and
wrap them with plastic if you can. If you are checking them in,
if you have carry-on luggage and are small like me
and can't reach the overhead compartment as you enter the plane, ask the flight
attendant to sky check in your bag, which means that they will keep it with
all the other baggage, but they will take it out and have it ready for you
when you arrive before entering the terminal.
Number four, make sure to keep personal belongings safe with you at all times.
Phones, cameras, charges, money or cards, ID or passport.
Number five, if you are traveling by car, make sure you have a first aid kit
with you. warning triangle, tools for changing a tire, a flashlight,
reflective vest and jumper cables in case of emergencies. Enjoy your holidays
and stay safe inshallah. Alhamdulillah. I mean, Shik and Isa, the
mobile esta bottle is something good, but Issa um you forgot to mention
something that you always always carries. He always carries um a hand
sanitizer gel. Um I'm surprised you didn't mention that one. It always helps, especially me because sometimes I
forget mine. And especially if you're somewhere and they've run out of soap or
for whatever reason, it's always good to be prepared. Um and speaking of being prepared, there's just something I want
to add. I know you mentioned travel musala water bottle and kab. But this is for those who aren't already traveling
with and wearing um an abaya or ka. So if if you're not already wearing those,
you know, while you're traveling, please please please always make sure to um carry a ka or you know, some c some some
may call it a th but um a ka and an abaya and a burka of course um it's just
for unexpected trips and as Muslims we should always be prepared. Yeah. And
it's also good to wear when you're traveling and you stop over at a masid. Yeah. Well, um I think it's it's also uh
like you said, yeah, to when you're going into a masid because um you know, you don't want uh to be inappropriately
dressed because sometimes we wear very relaxed clothes when we're traveling.
Um yeah. Yeah. So then just carry that with you at all times in a in in in your car
in your vehicle and then just put it on before you enter the masid
or even like sometimes like Issa said, you know, you have a a travel malah. So sometimes and we've had occasions where
the masids are like very very far away and we have to stop on the side of the road and and and make salah. Um, so you
know that that also um have your kas and as your travel malah all those type of
things cuz like we like I said um road trips is one of the biggest things here
in South Africa for for us and lately alhamdulillah we've been fortunate enough to get more and more
halal uh places as in halal eating places halal stopover places halal
accommodation you know when we were growing up. But we had to do
I would say traveling. You would say road trips cuz you actually had road trips. I had to travel. But um we never
had as much as we do today. Alhamdulillah. But there are still places where you know you go to and you
not in time to make salah. And obviously there is, you know, the musafir um
salah, you know, um but maybe you want to read it on time and
you're not near a masid and you're going to stop over like you say at the side of the road or um maybe at a petrol station
um service station and um yeah, so just always be prepared. Always have, you
know, those things around with you. Yeah, alhamdulillah. There are quite a lot of um service stations or petrol
stations that have uh masalas. Now um we have a list of it on our website i
love.com and um there's quite a lot of travel tips as well that we have on our website
which you can see but shukran to Nabia and Issa for those great travel tips and
um alhamdulillah inshallah it will help our listeners if our listeners have any tips they would like to share our

my name is shiknak I'm married in rambborg I'm a preschool teacher and I was asked by my cousin niha to share a
few places and activities in the northwest of us During the December holidays, Rustenberg is famous for
Pilannesburg National Park and of course Sun City. You can find the five the big five and a
variety of wildlife at Pilannisburg. You can have a picnic or a nice bri at the Batla resort or campsite. For
entertainment and water parks, the Valley of the Waves, Sun City is the place to be. For Sun City room bookings,
contact Nabila Dada on 0824274. She's a good friend of mine and she does
sensity bookings. If you like hiking and swimming, then check out Bafflesport Dam or Kaswani Nature Reserve. For water
sports and adventure, go to Hatapia Sport Dam located in Malisburg Mountains. They have ziplining as well.
You'll find the famous upside down house near there. And yes, there's a little Paris in Hatapia Sport. You'll find a
miniature Eiffel Tower there. I still want to go there and see it. Northwest hosts a Mahala week once a year, usually
in October. All the game reserves and nature parks are free for that week. I took my class for a picnic to Kaswani
Mountain Reserve in 2022 during the Mahala week. Alhamdulillah, they enjoyed it. If you're looking for something
private, you can visit Predators Rock in Rastenburg. They have a variety of predators. You'll find lions, leopards,
cheetahs, tigers, and much more. Another private park is Aquaba Predator Park
situated on the Costa Road. Then there's Maro in the northwest known for his
magical beauty home to many different fish eels and crabs. You can go diving in the crystal waters. If you're
visiting Mafi Kang, the capital of the Northwest, that's where I'm from. Do visit Mobatu Palms and the Phoenix
Racetrack and they have their own game reserve as well. I hope you find these places interesting. And for more
information, everything is on Google. Prices and contact details will all be there. May Allah keep everyone safe
during the holidays. For those traveling far, may the journey be easy inshallah
for sharing that. Alhamdulillah. If any more of our listeners would like to share during the week, you can do so on
our social media pages at iilovves.com. I l a m. We are on Instagram, Facebook,
X, LinkedIn, YouTube, Tik Tok as well as threads and as and of course as Yad mentioned on our website there's a lot
of information as well travel tips and things that you would like to add to you you are most welcome to do so. Um Rea
mentioned a mahala week. There was also a mahala week uh for something here in the region. I feel somewhere no is
Clark. Where's Clark? What region is that? Northwest. Northwest. So that's also northwest.
Yeah. Um okay. Um what what was the place that we went for went to the
It was a nature reserve. F Many's nature reserve. Fankey's nature reserve. And they had
their mahala week. I think it was like end of October, isn't it? I think it was sometime in October.
Sometime in October. So we went there where they so mahala week basically means a free week where um every day for
that week you can go to um that nature reserve or place and talking about that just not to cut
your word but um on our way back we found out that there's a was it a total
proport um that's halal yes uh the city of Matloana
Matloana so basically the people who know it as black sto. Yeah. So there's um um what's this?
There was a a musala there. There's I think a padal courts. There's halal uh
eeries. They have a halal min bean on the move and halal and um a food section inside
as well where they make their own food. So that was on the in four I think it was
that I wouldn't know. main road can't remember but yeah um it will be on our
social media on our website and you can you can have a look there. Yes. So speaking of you know traveling
which is actually the whole program but um here are some traveling duas. So this
one is something that I learned um as it's a dua for boarding the vehicle and
I take that to mean any type of vehicle like um a car, a plane, a train. And we
saw that radio Islam has these printed out in sticker format. Um it it says
alhamdulillah.
It means glory be to him oh Allah who has placed this conveyance in our control for we could never have managed
it without him and indeed to our lord we will surely surely return. Amen. Then
this is a dua that most of us learned um and know as well when starting a journey
is
this I actually found out recently is actually from surah in the Quran the
11th surah and part of the 41st 41st verse the full verse translates to and
he said board it in the name of Allah it will sail and cast anchor surely my lord
is all forgiving, most merciful. This um verse was actually spoken by
prophet Noisam instructing his people to board the ark,
you know, in the time of the ark, invoking Allah's name for both its movement and its rest.
Alhamdulillah. Sure. we we say to us but we sometimes don't
know where it comes from or what's the meaning or we just it gets passed down
from generation to generation and um it's good to know you know how
did it start where did it come from um cuz there's always significance of the
duas that we say um daily um so shukran for that na uh before we
wrap up today's program as promised for those born in December and January and
actually it's not limited to just these months um these specials or freebies uh
throughout the year no matter uh which month you were born in.
Um so we did some research and we've been doing some research I think for the last few years cuz things change. Uh
there's stuff that gets added and places close down. Um, and for some reason,
Cape Town businesses love to give freebies, which we're not we're not complaining about. That's nice, but it's just that we're
we're not there. Yeah. In Northwest, um, also up there, uh,
quite a few, not as many as as Cape Town. Um, but the rest of South Africa, including Durban, where where are your
freebies? Why are you not giving us anything? Um may maybe there's listeners um that
are from those parts of the country or anywhere in the world like we said and you get um some freebies on the month
that you were born in or the day that you were born. Sometimes they they actually don't even um they
limit it sometimes, you know, to just the day you were born. You have to go there with your ID to say that was the
day you born. Okay, that's when you're going to get a freebie. Some of them are generous enough for a week. They say
okay for the next seven days and some some 30 days as well. But I think what needs to be done is they
should issue the um voucher or whatever it is discount on your birthday and say
to you it's valid for 30 days because you want to give me something for free
but you I mean if there's so many free things to do how am I going to possibly do them all at the same time on on one
day? um you know so so yeah just ju just just a note um
to all to all out there um but let's get into it um uh Table Mountain Cableway is the
first one on our list it's in no particular order um but I know we went
uh few years ago actually quite a longite quite a while it was 9 years ago I can remember
because that was the last time that I was in Cape Town well we were well no you you go for these launches But it's
one day launches. But the three of us all together and you know specifically
saying that I that was the last time I was in Cape Town before we were um all lucky enough to go at the beginning of
this year for a motoring launch. But that was very very quickly and that was work. and during Ramadan.
And during Ramadan also. But uh yes, so 9 years ago was a proper
weekend holiday trip that we had um to Cape Town where um you you um allowed
you you helped me to get there on the day that I was born to go to Table
Mountain Cable Way. So that alhamdulillah was really really nice. Alhamdulillah. So, so Table Mountain
Cableway offers a free return trip for South African residents during your
birthday month with your ID. Um, I know
that I don't know if it's changed now cuz now it says during your birthday month, but when we went it was
specifically for the day that you were born. I feel like um I had to be there on the day that I was born.
Yeah. And you you had to present your ID to say that um you were born on that day.
Um, another one in Cape Town is the Two Oceans Aquarium. We haven't tried that one out. So, it says free entry for
residence on your birthday and the next 6 days. Okay, that's nice.
Okay. Um, there's Gold Reef City, um, which one of the sisters did mention. I
think her sister Ana, she um, said that they like to go to Gold Reef City. There's free entry to the theme park. Um
so if you have your ID there's there's that for those in Johannesburg. Um then in so there's a northwest um
there's the Hartis cable way and you have a free ride um if you have your ID
NA that was one I see we go for all uh these free things on your birthday like
all these adventures. Alhamdulillah. Alhamdulillah. So we went uh was it last
year? Was it last year? Isa think it was. Yes, it was last year. So we managed to get
to hot sport to um get a free ride and alhamdulillah we all three managed to
get a free ride on the cable way return trip. Yes, that was that was thanks to
that was a special um worker there. Yeah, that was thanks to the wonderful
employee at um Haris Cableway for allowing all of us to go on for the free
ride. Alhamdulillah. Then um we have the Lion and Safari Park in Johannesburg. Um
there's well it's actually in the northwest. So free self drive or guided
tour with your ID as well. So a lot of these things you need to make sure that you have your ID with. So remember to to
do that and uh free selfg guided tour free self drive or guided tour that's
quite nice for those who are interested in um going to a safari park or a lion
park would you know that if um if someone in the car has is their birthday does
everyone get free entrance or how does that work? No it's just for the person whose birthday it is. So you need to pay for the other people
in the car. Yeah. So everybody else would would need to pay. Okay. So that is something we still have
yet to try out. Would be nice. Yes. And then um there's also the Bongo
Rhino and Lion Nature Reserve. Um who also give a complimentary self-drive
experience. The entry ticket is valid on the day of your birthday only and subject to presentation of your ID. So
you can choose between the Lion and Safari Park or the Bongo Rhino and Lion
Nature Reserve. They're quite close to each other. We actually went to the Bongo one, not on the free
um the free drive, complimentary self-drive experience. But we went there for for one of the launches.
Yeah, one of the motoring launches. I think it was Nissen. Was it Nissen? And then it was a very
quick one because um you know when we go for these launches unfortunately it's not like you know when you go um with
your family or you go you know to for leisurely where you get to you know enjoy yourself take as much time as you
want. They on a schedule a strict schedule to make sure that you get to test the the car and and yeah so it's
more about that. Um but alhamdulillah at least we got entry to it. We saw what it
was like. Yeah. And we saw one of the things was a caves. There was a caves there.
Oh, yeah. So, we did manage to go to the caves in there. We didn't see any animals in this uh Bongo Rhino and Lion
Nature Reserve. We did. We saw a few animals. We didn't I think there was a lion. We see the Did we see the lion?
Yeah, there was a lion enclosure and there was um giraffes or something. Oh, okay. But we didn't see any rhinos.
No, we didn't see the rhinos. Okay. Yeah. So um it also depends on you know like how long you spend there but
there is the caves that we went to and that was quite nice. Um also I think
sister Ana mentioned something about the staff frontain caves um being if you you you fine with small spaces. So this was
also you know small spaces enclosed spaces going down um very long stairs
into an enclosed space. So if just it be careful of that if you are maybe claustrophobic.
Yeah. And then um if you're not afraid of heights um there's the sky high ride
that's at the Hotel Sky in Cape Town and you get a free ride. Um but that you
need to register with their app. Um, also if you have the uh bounce, if
you're part of the bounce birthday club, you receive a free bounce on your special day with locations in
Johannesburg, Pritoria. Oh, and Durban as well. Oh, okay. Nice. There's one for Durban.
Okay. Total Ninja with their birthday
ninja offer. You can enjoy a 1hour ninja session with for free on
your birthday valid only on the day and with the presentation of your ID.
Okay. And then um again back in Cape Town we have the Cape Wheel. Um if you
join their birthday club on their website, you will receive a free birthday voucher um which is also valid
for 30 days. Um but if you do not have the printed voucher from the email um
you can still have a free ride on only on your birthday. So uh but that's you
need your you need your ID for that. So Okay. So if you have a printed voucher,
it's only on the day. I mean it's for the whole month. Yeah. But you need to be part of their club. I think a lot a lot of these
things are you know like to gain members um part of the clubs or to download the
apps or whatever it is. Um upycles also again in Cape Town um
enjoy a complimentary 1h hour scenic bike ride on the Seintoint prominade. So you could start your day or end your day
with a scenic uh ride um in Cape Town and all you need um is to bring a valid
South African ID. Okay. Okay. Um there's a Zites mocker as well.
Um stop by any day during your birthday month to redeem your free entry ticket to the Zites mocker. That's a museum.
Oh, okay. In Cape Town. Um then there's city sightseeing. Children between the ages of 4 and 17
get a free 1-day classic bus ticket for their birthday. The birthday boy or girl
can also bring along one friend for free on the day. They also need to be aged 4
to 17. So you can't bring a 25year-old friend with you. They must be
accompanied by one adult riding at full price. Register 2 weeks before the birthday to receive the ticket by email
which will be valid for 4 weeks. one week before the child's birthday and three weeks after. Um, Freedom Adventure
Park is also um uh in Tokai and Canal Walk. You can get a free 1-hour session
exclude socks and any combo deals. You also need to present your South African ID. Robin Island, take a free tour of
the Robin Island Museum. You also need to present your um ID for that. And then
cool runningings. Um if you know uh they have these tobogen rides, slides. Um so
they're offering a free ride during your birthday month. Also produce your ID. Um
and then Bush Baby's Monkey Sanctuary in Hartport. You get a 50% discount on the
1 hour guided tour and terms and conditions apply. So I think um the most
important thing is just to to download apps um you know like check these uh
specials when they are um uh weeks in advance so that you you can prepare and
plan for it. Uh take your ID with you um wherever you go. So if there's something
that you just see on your birthday then you can That's a good idea. Yeah. Always carry your ID on your birthday.
Yeah. then you can uh uh do that. And then just check the validity cuz
sometimes like we said it's for the whole month, sometimes it's for several days or sometimes it's just on the day.
Um and then also check terms and conditions cuz they might have a minimum
spend um or it can't be used in conjunction with other special like this last one was a 50% and not a
free not a whole mahala thing. I'm just thinking it's true because imagine going
you want to go to a nature reserve on your birthday but you want to do the other stuff and nature reserves usually
um take up quite a lot of time because you're there busy looking for animals you're driving around anyway.
Alhamdulillah for all of that. That was really nice and um I'm sure you will continue with
that during the month with the rest of the um things to do. and um shukran to
Ana and Raisa for taking the time to go through all the things in your provinces
and for sharing that with us. To Issa for sharing those travel tips
to our dear listeners for joining us on this lovely Sunday afternoon. We hope
you keep safe especially with the severe thunderstorms and hail storms that we've
have been having lately. And if you're traveling on the road, be aware of road works and always be aware of your
surroundings. Stay safe if you're traveling. We wish you safe travels, inshallah. Join us every Sunday,
inshallah, from 2 to 3:00 p.m. right here on Radio Islam International. From
myself, Nabiha, from Zad, and from Isa. Enjoy your Sunday, and we wish you a wonderful week ahead, inshallah.
too.
