has navigated a year of significant international leadership, economic shifts, and some intense social

challenges. Let's look at the top stories that defined the year. I think one of the biggest stories for us as a

um locally and internationally was the global summar.

Um we had some of the um the crew and those who wanted to go on the crew but were not

um very successful in or not not successful but they had to give up their

to be on board, but they, uh, had to give their seat up, but were supporting from, um, from wherever they were in the

world. And obviously those who uh, were detained as a result of being on on on board. Um

it just had excuse excuse the pun but a ripple effect and alhamdulillah we thank those may

I mean and um I think one of the big stories here in South Africa this year obviously the G20 presidency in South

Africa. It made history as the first African nation to host the G20 summit. It was held in November.

uh that was just last month. The summit focused on the theme solidarity, equality and sustainability.

While it was hailed as a diplomatic success for President Ramapora and the global south, the event was marked by a

notable US boycott and tension with the Trump administration over local human rights narratives.

Okay. So, if you were following that story, you know, there was quite a bit of tension with um the orange president

and obviously um the whole handover for the next G20 summit which is going to be

held next year in America. Um it was there was a junior person that was sent

and South Africa had their junior person to hand it over and then Trump said that he wasn't going to allow South Africa or

not welcome them next year. Um and obviously there's the FIFA World Cup happening in the US as well and are we not allowed to go there?

Well, South Africa is part of it. I think you're going to be talking about the sports later in the show.

So um yeah. So yeah. So that was quite a big story I think. Okay. Then if we look at the economic green shoots and credit

upgrade for the first time in nearly two decades, South Africa received a sovereign credit rating upgrade from a

BB minus to a BB by SNP Global. This was driven by fiscal discipline, a narrowing

budget deficit and improved performance from state-owned enterprises.

energy stability, a significant reduction in load shedding due to a surge in private renewable energy

products and the 890 megawatt solar boost. So that was quite good for us in

terms of sustainability and obviously our our credit rating.

The rand the currency strengthened occasionally breaching the 17 rand to the dollar mark. It was also quite good.

Alhamdulillah. And then we had the Madlanga Commission. An explosive development in the justice sector was

the Madlanga Commission which released reports investigating high level corruption and collusion between organized crime and the police. This led

to highprofile fallout including the suspension of police minister Senzo.

So that was quite a high-profile um case that's been going on. Then one of the

big things back to uh Trump was the Afric a Africana refugee program which was a major diplomatic flashoint

occurred when the Trump administration launched a program to bring white South Africans to the US as refugees citing

claims of human rights abuses. The South African government dismissed this as politically motivated leading to the expulsion of several foreign nationals

involved in processing these applications.

And um to carry on with that story, we've heard a lot of uh refugees that

are in America that actually want to come back now. So they say it's not as uh green there as they thought it would be. um sporting triumphs and milestones.

It was a historical year for South African sports. I think Nabia will go a little bit more deeper into it. In cricket, the pros won their first major

international title since 1998 by defeating Australia in the ICC World Test Championship final in London. In

soccer, Bafana Bafana officially qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after convincing 3nil win against Rwanda.

And if we look at social challenges and tragedies, we had the water crisis while energy stabilized.

Water security became the new national concern with Johannesburg and parts of the free state facing severe outages and rates revolts from residents. That was

inshallah that that will be sorted out soon. And then public safety, the murder of DJ Wars in Johannesburg sent shock

waves through the entertainment industry and reignited debates about violent crime. So he was busy with uh buildings that were being hijacked. They were

tightening up the security and there was a hit on him which led to um his death.

An environmental winds in a rare piece of good news for biodiversity. A species of lizard thought to be extinct for 53
