The driving force behind the Toyota Academy

Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) has reaffirmed its commitment to rugby excellence and youth development as the proud sponsor of the Toyota Academy. Recently renovated, the modernised Academy Gymnasium and upgraded training spaces reflect Toyota’s commitment to shape the next generation of South African rugby talent.

Founded in 2017, the Toyota Academy accelerates player development from schoolboy level through to professional play. In just eight years, more than 53 Academy graduates have earned Toyota Cheetahs contracts, highlighting its success as a proven pathway to elite rugby.

A proven breeding ground of South Africa’s best

Bloemfontein remains central to the country’s rugby development. It is home to renowned institutions such as Grey College, as well as Varsity Cup teams Shimlas and Ixias, all contributing to a strong talent pipeline.

Recent Toyota Cheetahs Academy-connected achievements include:

  • Springboks: Ox Nché, Joseph Dweba, Jasper Wiese, Marnus van der Merwe and Boan Venter
  • Blitzboks: Lubabalo Dobela and Darren Adonis
  • Varsity Cup: Cohen Jasper
  • Junior Springboks SA U20: George Cronje, Erich Visser and Fano Linde

These achievements reinforce the Free State’s position as one of South Africa’s most consistent talent producers.

Celebrating potential through storytelling

To shine a spotlight on emerging players, Toyota and the Academy are launching a new content campaign showcasing skill, power and personality. Behind-the-scenes training clips will reveal extraordinary moments from everyday sessions, inspiring fans and building excitement around the next wave of rising stars.

The campaign will be launched soon across Toyota South Africa Motors' social media channels, in collaboration with the Toyota Cheetahs.

Toyota’s lasting commitment to rugby and community development

For decades, Toyota has supported rugby at school, grassroots and professional levels across South Africa. The Toyota Academy strengthens this legacy by focusing on:

  • Developing junior players for senior Cheetahs contracts
  • Building long-term brand loyalty among rising athletes
  • Establishing the Academy as South Africa’s most sought-after elite development system

“Toyota is deeply invested in the communities we serve and rugby remains a powerful platform for opportunity, growth and national pride,”

says Glenn Crompton, Vice President of Marketing at Toyota South Africa Motors.

“The Toyota Academy shows how focused development, supported by quality facilities and committed partners, can shape the future of the sport. We are proud to help drive this journey forward.”

With its blend of high-performance training, academic support and strong rugby heritage, the Toyota Academy stands as a symbol of excellence in South African player development, powered by Toyota’s ongoing dedication to progress and community upliftment.
