Administered by the South African Guild of Mobility Journalists (SAGMJ), the COTY competition assessed 18 finalists across performance, engineering, value, safety and overall execution. After a three-day evaluation programme at Zwartkops Raceway and on surrounding routes in Tshwane, the Junior was recognised specifically for its design execution, marking an early local acknowledgement for Alfa Romeo’s electrified portfolio.
The win arrives just months after the Junior was introduced to the local market, signalling that Alfa Romeo's renewed direction has resonated with one of the country's most experienced juries: a panel of 28 expert motoring journalists and industry professionals, with collective expertise spanning over 500 years of motoring journalism.
What distinguished the Alfa Romeo Junior’s design at the 2026 COTY awards?
The Junior reflects Alfa Romeo’s design language in a compact electric format, including its balanced proportions, signature front-end and driver-focused interior layout. The Junior is the first fully electric model from Alfa Romeo to land in South Africa, and it stays true to the brand's design and dynamic priorities. With a 4.2-metre footprint, front-mounted electric motor and balanced stance, the Junior delivers the kind of road feel that distinguishes Alfa Romeo from category norms.
"This is a significant moment for Alfa Romeo in South Africa,"
says Janus Janse van Rensburg, Head of Product and Marketing at Alfa Romeo.
"The Junior was designed to bring Alfa Romeo’s design language into an electric format. Recognition from the COTY panel for its design reinforces the direction we’ve taken with the model."
He adds that the recognition reflects the brand’s continued focus on design as a core differentiator within the premium compact segment.
Two variants are available locally. The Elettrica produces 118 kW and 260 Nm, with a top speed of 152 km/h and a 0–100 km/h time of just over 9 seconds. The range-topping Elettrica Veloce delivers 207 kW and 345 Nm, accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.9 seconds, and tops out at 200 km/h.
