As ISUZU gears up for its all-New Generation Truck launch, the brand reflects on more than 60 years of truck excellence in South Africa

As ISUZU Motors South Africa prepares to unveil the next chapter in its commercial vehicle journey, the company is reflecting on a proud heritage spanning more than six decades of understanding the South African market, more than 100 years of ISUZU engineering excellence, our unique customer partnership expertise and our ecosystem of aftersales excellence which is all backed by unwavering reliability. This has resulted in ISUZU Motors South Africa to lead the combined medium and heavy truck market excluding vans and busses for 13 years.

Long before "built for Africa" became an industry catchphrase, ISUZU trucks were already proving themselves on South African roads.

The story began in 1964 when the first ISUZU Elfin TKG10 1.5-ton truck arrived in South Africa. Since then, the brand has continually expanded and evolved its truck portfolio to meet the changing demands of customers, introducing successive generations of trusted nameplates including the JCR, J-Series, N-Series, F-Series, G-Series, FX/FY heavy-duty range and, more recently, the latest-generation N- and F-Series trucks. Each generation has represented another step forward in capability, efficiency, durability and driver comfort while remaining true to the qualities that have defined ISUZU for more than 60 years.

This singular focus has earned ISUZU the trust of fleet operators, entrepreneurs, municipalities and owner-drivers alike. Customers know that an ISUZU truck is engineered to minimise downtime, reduce operating costs and deliver dependable performance in some of the toughest operating environments on the continent.

South Africa has played a pivotal role in Isuzu's global success story. Local manufacturing has been part of the company's DNA for decades, with the Gqeberha manufacturing facility producing commercial vehicles for both the domestic market and export into Sub-Saharan Africa. Following Isuzu Motors Limited's acquisition of the South African operations in 2018, the company reaffirmed its long-term commitment to local manufacturing, investment, skills development and economic growth.

Over the years, the trucks themselves have evolved alongside customer needs.

From improving fuel efficiency and payload capability to introducing enhanced driver ergonomics, advanced safety technologies, telematics compatibility and lower total cost of ownership, every new generation has reflected Isuzu's philosophy of continuous improvement. With the world putting a bigger focus on sustainability - Isuzu has put a strong focus on alternate propulsion considering Euro 5 that doesn’t need AdBlue, Diesel-Gas Hybrids branded as Dual Fuel, full CNG trucks, as well as electric trucks. Rather than changing for the sake of change, each innovation has been driven by customer feedback and the practical realities of operating commercial vehicles in Southern Africa.
