August is All About Spoiling Your Dogs and Cats

You probably don’t need an excuse to go a little overboard with the treats, toys and belly rubs this month, but here’s one anyway.
August is full of reasons to celebrate our pets. There was International Cat Day on the 8th, National Spoil Your Dog Day on the 10th, and International Dog Day rounding things off on the 26th of August.
Basically, an entire month dedicated to showing our furry friends just how loved they are. Wondering how to make the most of it? We’ve got some ideas.
Whether it's a walk somewhere new, a game of fetch in the garden, or a lazy stroll around the block, physical activity is one of the best ways to bond with your pooch. Dogs thrive on new smells and sights, so a change of scenery - a different park, a pet-friendly beach or trail - can turn an ordinary walk into a real adventure. Cats can get in on the fun too, with a feather wand or laser pointer session that gets them chasing and pouncing until they collapse in an exhausted heap.
A special treat now and then is always enthusiastically received. A new chew toy, a slice of plain cooked chicken, or a puzzle feeder loaded with unsweetened peanut butter will all be appreciated. Just make sure to keep portions sensible. The goal is a happy pet, not a trip to the vet for indigestion. If you're not sure what's okay, a quick check with your animal doc on pet-safe treats is always worth it.
Give them your undivided attention
Sometimes the best gift is quality time. Put the phone down, skip the multitasking, and give your pet a solid chunk of one-on-one attention - a full-on cuddle session, a grooming brush-down, or just sitting with them while they nap in a sunny spot. Cats and dogs alike pick up on genuine presence, and it costs nothing but a bit of time. (For remote-working pet owners, this time away from the laptop offers a mental health boost as well.)
Give their space a mini makeover
A new bed, a different blanket, or simply washing their existing bedding can make a bigger difference than you'd think. (Bonus points if you throw their plush toys in the wash at the same time.) Pets spend a huge amount of their day resting, so a comfortable, clean spot to sleep is a genuinely meaningful gift - even if it's not a flashy one.

Boredom is often behind a lot of unwanted pet behaviour, so use this month as an excuse to mix things up. Rotate old toys back into circulation (they'll seem brand new again), hide treats around the house for a sniff-and-seek game, or introduce a new puzzle toy to keep their mind busy. For cats, a cardboard box, a paper bag, or some fresh catnip can provide a surprising amount of joy for very little effort.
Don't forget the golden oldies
If you've got a senior pet, spoiling them might look a little different - a softer bed for aching joints, a gentle massage or simply taking it a little slower on walks. Every pet deserves to feel celebrated, but the older ones could use a little extra TLC. Remember, they suffer from the same aches and maladies as we humans.
If you're feeling extra generous this month, consider stretching the love beyond your own pets. TEARS Animal Rescue always welcomes donations of blankets, toys, treats or food for animals currently in their care - many of whom are still waiting for a forever home where they’ll be spoiled.
Even a short visit to volunteer or walk a shelter dog can make a real difference to an animal who doesn't have a family showering them with attention just yet.
However you choose to mark the occasion, the most important ingredients are: love, attention and maybe one or two extra treats. Our pets give us so much, let’s use August as a reason to give them something back.
