According to George Mienie, AutoTrader CEO, hatches used to be the most searched for vehicles by body type. “That was in 2019. According to AutoTrader’s Car Industry Report, which covers the period July 2019 to June 2020, hatches accounted for 31% of all used cars sold – making it the most sold body type by far. Over 4,2 million searches for hatches specifically were conducted via AutoTrader during 2019 alone. In the second half of 2020 however, their popularity was eclipsed by single and double cab bakkies. But this body type remains extremely sought-after in South Africa,” he reveals.
One of the reasons for their popularity is the value for money that they offer. According to the Bi-Annual AutoTrader Car Industry Report, titled #ReBound, which covers the period July 2020 to December 2020, hatchbacks offer the best value for money out of all body types. This is revealed by the intersection between price, mileage and body type; on average, hatchbacks have the lowest mileage and latest year model for their price point. (Specifically, the average price for a hatch was R181 548 during that period while the average mileage was 59 144 km.)
But fast forward to 2021. Assuming you have a budget of R170 000 and you want to acquire a hatchback, what is available? The good news is that there are lots of excellent hatches on offer – and you can acquire one with very low mileage too. For instance, both the second and third most sold used hatchback in South Africa during 2020. We’re referring to the Volkswagen Polo Vivo and Ford Fiesta respectively. A total of R166,894.00 will land you the former (2017 model year, 50 900 km on the clock) while R166,438.00 will secure you the Fiesta (2016 model year, mileage of 70 917 km).
So, the good news is that there is no reason for South Africans’ love affairs with hatches to end any time soon!
