BYD Powers Car of the Year Finalist Evaluation with Mobile PHEV and EV Charging
BYD South Africa is deploying a prototype mobile electric vehicle charging unit at the South African Car of the Year finalist evaluation session taking place on Thursday, 5 March 2026 at Zwartkops Raceway in Centurion.
The deployment marks the first use of a mobile charging unit for PHEV’s and EV’s of this type in South Africa. The system will provide on-site fast-charging capability for plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles participating in the judging session, demonstrating how portable charging infrastructure can support electric mobility in environments where permanent charging stations are not yet available.

This milestone is particularly significant for the brand, with two BYD models, the Shark 6 and the Dolphin Surf, named finalists in this year’s South African Car of the Year competition.
Supporting the growth of South Africa’s EV ecosystem
As electric mobility continues to expand globally, attention is increasingly shifting toward practical solutions that enable real-world deployment. In South Africa, new energy vehicle (NEV) adoption is gradually increasing as more manufacturers enter the market and charging infrastructure continues to develop.
This shift places greater emphasis on flexible charging technologies capable of supporting vehicle testing environments, temporary installations and locations where permanent infrastructure may not yet be available.
Prototype Mobile Charging Technology
The prototype mobile charging system deployed at Zwartkops Raceway combines high-capacity battery storage with fast-charging capability, enabling reliable performance throughout the evaluation day.
The system is designed to provide approximately 10 hours of continuous operation and includes:
- Two 30kW DC fast-charging units
- A power inverter system
- Two 215kWh lithium-ion battery packs integrated with the inverter
- Approximately 320kW usable power capacity
- High-speed DC charging capability
The mobile unit demonstrates how portable EV charging technology can support automotive events, vehicle testing environments and other temporary applications, while contributing to the continued development of South Africa’s electric mobility ecosystem.
BYD, a global leader in new-energy vehicles, continues to develop technologies that accelerate the transition toward cleaner and more sustainable transportation worldwide.
