This relevant piece of musical theatre, speaks to issues that women and men are addressing all over the world and especially in South Africa. The Color Purple will leave you hopeful in the efforts to relieve the plight of women’s rights.

“Women in South Africa and the world over, will never be truly free until they are free from structural sexism, unpoliced domestic violence, and the harms of drug and alcohol abuse. As a society, we have so much as to add to the key conversations around feminism and what it means to be a woman in contemporary South Africa. Now more than ever, we need to empower & educate the new generation of women and young girls to stand up against gender based violence and abuse, prejudices that keep women in “check” and this production gives us hope that it can be done!”

states Xoliswa Nduneni- Ngema, Chief Executive Officer at Joburg City Theatres.

Throughout history, women empowerment has been at the forefront of the womens’ rights, liberation and equality movements globally. There has however, been a significant progress and advancements in the elevation of women.

The recent #MeToo Campaign which exploded globally, shed light on the work that still needs to be done, but also highlighted the progress that has been achieved in this subject.

This is why the story of The Color Purple is so relevant today, not only is Alice Walker a prominent activist and a thought leader in the feminist movement, she proactively coined the term "womanist" to mean "A black feminist or feminist of colour" in 1983.

Her novel The Color Purple which won the National Book Award for hardcover fiction, and the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1983, addresses these very issues.

The book follows the story of young Celie, who overcomes and eventually rises above her many adversities, through the help and support of three other women in her life.

As a result, Executive Producer, Bernard Jay and Joburg City Theatres Chief Executive Officer, Ms Xoliswa Nduneni-Ngema thought it important to extend the run during Women’s Month in South Africa.

Audiences were empowered & inspired by the musical which officially premiered in South Africa on the 4th of February 2018 on the Mandela Stage at Joburg Theatre, as it addressed the core of these atrocities, bringing about a sense of hope.

Patrons resonated with songs like “Too Beautiful for Words”, “What about Love”, “Miss Celie’s Pants”, and “I’m Here”, to name a few, which became personal anthems for many.

The Color Purple will re-open at the Mandela stage at Joburg Theatre on August 7th 2018 and will run until September 2nd.
