A global celebration recognising the work of tutors and their impact on students' lives: World Tutor Day.

On 2 July 2020, Qualified Tutor founded World Tutor Day; a day born during the COVID-19 pandemic, when tutors across the globe were working overtime to try and bridge the gap of students who had limited educational resources or no-school at all.

Ziyaad Plaatjes, Co-Founder of the After Fajr Grind Academy in South Africa spoke to us about how his institute and his home lifestyle changed during that period.

"Our son had just started Grade R and for most of the year he was at home with a few online classes. My wife and I took it upon ourselves to rudimentarily homeschool him. By 2021 when he started Grade 1 we continued homeschooling and have been for the past 4 years after. At first people were surprised at our "bold move" to homeschool our son, but the more people we spoke to, the more they wanted the one-on-one attention for their children."

said Ziyaad.

Ziyaad continues,

"Both my wife and I had been in the education industry for many years and we both still offer our services as Concessions Facilitator, to students who have learning disabilities and require extra time, a separate venue, a prompt, physical assistance, reader or scribe during their tests and exams. Equipped with this and our previous teaching, lecturing, and training experience we started taking on a few one-on-one tutoring sessions for close friends and family."

"We now provide tuition for students from Grade R to 3rd year University across the globe, as we offer in-person and online sessions through our network of highly qualified tutors and ex-teachers and lecturers at the After Fajr Grind Academy."

World Tutor Day recognises the efforts and contributions of institutions like the After Fajr Grind Academy, and expresses gratitude to the individuals like Ziyaad Plaatjes and his team who strive to assist students, often going above and beyond, to make a meaningful impact on the future generation.
