Decorex Joburg shows there is always room to grow in latest feature

Three inspired room settings will envision the latest trends and customised furniture, easily adapted to meet the growing needs in this year’s Rooms to Grow feature.
This modern installation forms part of the 25th features’ programme of Decorex Joburg, presented by Plascon, taking place at the Gallagher Convention Centre from 8 to 12 August.
“There are so many exciting innovations and designs when it comes to children’s room settings which many people have not yet discovered,”
explained Sian Cullingworth, Portfolio Director at Decorex SA.
“While the baby’s nursery was always a focal point for parents, the concept of room design seemed to stop there. The stylish Rooms to Grow exposes parents to the range of new concepts and inspiration for every age, from the nursery through to the adolescent’s sanctuary. We’re also excited to share the cleverly crafted furniture, that can be adapted as the child matures.”
Three quality designers – Petit Love, Clever Little Monkey and The Room Furniture – were tasked with curating the three bedroom settings, namely the Baby’s Room, the Toddler’s Room and finally, the Tween’s Room, all infused with this year’s #rhythmoflife theme.
Baby’s Room
The first step in the Rooms to Grow feature will be the baby’s nursery, crafted by Petit Love into a luxurious, modern-vintage space with a touch of fairytale whimsy.
“We're going to incorporate soft neutrals, combined with some new palettes of pink and a pop of bubblegum blue,”
said Angé Baard of Petit Love.
“These will be matched with custom-designed furniture pieces in some unexpected colours, for a playful twist.”
She explained that, from newborn, to infant, to toddler, to child, to teenager, to adult, Petit Love’s creative focus will be to design a breathtaking room that’s timeless. This baby room will be beautiful, practical and high-quality, and easily transformable as the little one grows.
“We don’t want to give away any surprises just yet, but the Petit Room will feature furniture pieces from our collaborative brand collection, as well as some fresh, exciting prints and textures from the Hertex range. We’re using this opportunity to showcase our unique style - so, watch this space!”
Commenting on colour trends, Baard said:
“While pastels remain a firm favourite in many children’s rooms, we are beginning to see the introduction of fuller levels of colours, such as jewel greens and blues.”
She further elaborated:
“The Boho trend has proven popular this season, bringing in some fun pops of colour, while oversized florals and foliage prints remain key as spring approaches. Statement wallpapers are overtaking small, finer decals of previous seasons. Metallics such as brass, copper and rose gold are also important details. We’d like to encompass international and local trends into our room, that will ultimately speak to a wider audience while remaining relevant for years to come.”
Toddler’s Room
Taking the first steps in the toddler’s room is Clever Little Monkey, using a fruit inspired colour palette incorporating nude pink and metallic elements into the décor.
“With its juicy pops of colour and clean lines, the new Flexa Popsicle range celebrates the perfect summer fruit inspired colours,”
said Yulande Roxburgh.
“We will be featuring the mid-high bed, creating a playful space for the toddler to enjoy.”
Commenting on current trends for children’s rooms, Roxburgh said that solid wood or wood finishes, with colour accents for furniture, are becoming more prevalent than ever.
“We’re finding that 100 percent cotton rugs and bedding with soft pastels and natural references are very popular, as they work to bring children back to nature.”
Clever Little Monkey will feature their Flexa Popsicle range from Denmark in blueberry and showcasing matching decor and bedding to show off the look. They are also using this space to launch the newly-landed rug ranges – 100% cotton and machine washable - from the popular Spanish brand, Lorena Canals.
“We want this to be a truly enlivened, magical space that resonates with both the children and the parents. It’s a fun space where the imagination is allowed to flourish, and where the child feels safe and comforted.”
Tween’s Room
The Room Furniture has been tasked with creating a space which really resonates with those in-between years, the time where childhood is still a part of life but the changes of adolescence are being embraced.
Although they won’t be giving away too much detail on the colour or style as yet, The Room Furniture will be sure to create an innovative space that showcases their vibrant furniture range suited to all ages.
“We feel that furniture should, at all times, be functional and practical in both small and large rooms,”
explained Shirley du Plessis of The Room Growing Furniture.
“We always emphasise the optimisation of space which is why we prefer tailor–made furniture which has significantly more storage space. We build furniture with a view of ‘expanding’ throughout the growing years as opposed to replacing items.”
For the Tween’s Room, The Room Furniture will bring in a timeless feel through personalised design, colours and textures. The prefer to incorporate bespoke bedroom furniture that reflects the feeling that the bedroom is not just a place to sleep.
“The bedroom is a private sanctuary, particularly for tweens and teens who need a safe haven to relax but also to study,”
said Du Plessis.
“To meet this need, we are expanding our range of conventional desks, bookshelves and storage items to have a more modern look and feel.”
