After opening to rave reviews in March 2020, no-one could’ve predicted that only a few days later, the South African president would announce a “3 week” Covid-19 lockdown – which resulted in the theatre remaining closed for 2 years, and the general public not having the opportunity to see the production that had just opened.

The Peoples Theatre is thrilled that children in Johannesburg will once again be boogying down to this endearing favourite.

This all-time children’s classic is produced by Jill Girard and Keith Smith, who say;

“This ensures that not only will Gauteng audiences be entertained by the magic of Disney's treatment of Rudyard Kipling's classic story but also by the wonderful songs (Music Director is Coenraad Rall, set (by Grant Knottenbelt) and choreography (by the world-renowned Sandy Dyer Richardson) will bring all the essential ingredients that will make this a memorable, theatrical experience!”

This story has been a hit with children since it was published in 1893.The Peoples Theatre production of Disney’s The Jungle Book Kids features a delightful cast of professional actors and talented children who will magically weave their way through the jungle capturing the imagination of every child in the audience while allowing them to participate in the action of this much-loved favorite.

Baloo will be played by one of Peoples Theatres favourite performers, Luciano Zuppa, Baloo is an easygoing and fun-loving character who shirks at responsibility. He is a sleepy old bear who teaches Mowgli the law of the jungle and is well known for his song The Bare necessities during their adventure through the jungle Baloo eventually realises that the man village is the best place for Mowgli.

Bagheera is Mowgli's mentors and protector, and is tasked with getting Mowgli to the man village but he is met with many obstacles along the way, Bagheera will be played by the wonderful Yamikani Mahaka-Phiri, who was recently seen in Beneath African Skies

Kaa will be played by Noni Mkhonto another favourite at Peoples Theatre. Kaa is surprisingly one of Mowgli's wise mentors and friend. who is also feared throughout the jungle for her mesmerizing "hunger dance". She plays her part in getting Mowgli to safety.

Shere Khan, is a vicious man-eating Bengal Tiger who is the main villain and the arch-enemy of Mowgli and will be played by Micah Stojakovic . This is Micah’s debut show at Peoples Theatre but he is recognizable from the various productions he appeared in while studying at Stageworx School of Performing Arts.

Girard concludes;

Having produced critically-acclaimed children’s theatre for over 30 years, with sold-out successes such as Disney’s Alice in Wonderland, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, Shrek and Seussical to mention but a few, Peoples Theatre was facing imminent closure when a partnership with the Joburg Theatre was created to produce this fabulous show. Together with the generosity of private sponsors, Collett Dawson, Sandy Dyer Richardson, Sean McGrath and Title Card Productions, we are back on stage.”
