Ford Tourneo Custom Range Expanded with New Engine, Automatic Gearbox and Enhanced Technologies
Ford's versatile range of Tourneo Custom Bus models has been expanded with the addition of two six-speed automatic derivatives for the first time, which are powered by the latest-generation 2.0-litre Single Turbo engine.
Available in both mid-level Trend and range-topping Limited series, the two new models also feature a completely new interior. On the Limited model, this incorporates Ford's SYNC®3 with an integrated eight-inch touchscreen, which provides significantly improved features and ease of use for the infotainment system and smartphone functionality.
"The Ford Tourneo Custom is a popular people-mover that provides outstanding flexibility to suit a wide variety of applications, from busy moms and dads transporting children to school and sports matches, businesses relying on it as an upmarket executive shuttle or simply as a spacious and highly adaptable vehicle for large families," says Doreen Mashinini, General Manager Marketing at Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa (FMCSA).
"We've seen growing customer demand for an automatic version of the Tourneo Custom, and we are delighted to expand the current line-up with the two new models that feature the smooth-shifting six-speed automatic transmission," Mashinini adds. "The new gearbox is paired with a new 2.0 Single Turbo engine that delivers superb performance and fuel economy, matched to low running costs, as well as extremely low emissions through the use of Ford's AdBlue® technology. This new engine delivers 96kW in the Trend model and a punchy 136kW on the range-topping Limited - making it ideal for both spectrums of buyer.
"The Tourneo Custom's features set has also been ramped up significantly with the introduction of our award-winning SYNC®3 infotainment system and eight-inch touchscreen on the Limited model, giving owners access to the very best audio and smartphone connectivity to seamlessly integrate into their everyday lives. This is complemented by an array of optional features such as Adaptive Cruise Control."
New 2.0 Single Turbo engine with AdBlue®
The all-new automatic derivatives of the Tourneo Custom Bus are powered by the latest generation 2.0-litre Single Turbo diesel engine, which is derived from the impressive units used in the current Ford Ranger and Everest models.
Two versions of this engine are available, with the unit in the mid-level Tourneo Custom Trend producing 96kW of power matched to 385Nm of torque. The top-spec Tourneo Custom Limited delivers 136kW allied to a substantial torque peak of 415Nm - which guarantees impressive all-round performance, whether negotiating traffic in busy city commutes or heading out onto the open road.
Uniquely in this application - and a first for Ford in South Africa - both variations of this engine in the Tourneo Custom use Ford's AdBlue® technology, which uses a non-toxic urea/water-based solution to convert nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions in the exhaust gas into eco-friendly nitrogen and water. A particulate filter then reduces more than 99% of emitted solid particulates from the vehicle's exhaust, thereby contributing to a cleaner and healthier environment. Low-sulphur grade diesel of 50ppm or lower is required in combination with the AdBlue system.
AdBlue is stored in a 21-litre tank, with the dedicated filler located below the diesel fuel filler neck on the Tourneo Custom. If the AdBlue level is low, a message appears on the information display indicating the remaining range along with a warning light to remind the driver that a top-up is required. The level can also be checked via the AdBlue Status option in the Driver Assist menu.
"AdBlue brings a new dimension to Ford's efforts to reduce exhaust emissions and make a meaningful contribution to environmental sustainability," explains Mashinini.
In both models, power is delivered to the front wheels via the six-speed automatic transmission that does duty in the current Ranger 2.2 and 3.2-litre models, delivering great responsiveness and all-round performance. It offers conventional automatic shifting in "Drive", as well as "Sport" mode for more responsive performance. Additionally, "Manual" mode with SelectShift gives the driver control over the gearshift points, which is particularly useful when towing.
All-new dashboard, SYNC®3 for the first time on Tourneo
While the exterior styling of the new Tourneo Custom automatic models is unchanged from the recently facelifted range, the cabin environment has been enhanced with an all-new dashboard and instrument panel based on Ford's new interior design philosophy - pioneered on the current Fiesta and EcoSport. This offers an attractive, user-centric layout that is influenced by consumer interactions with smart devices and tablets.
Based around strong horizontal design elements that emphasise the width of the cabin, the new dashboard has a distinctly upscale appearance, reinforced by soft-touch surfaces and attractive detailing with chrome and gloss black finishes. The new instrument cluster, displays and control panels have been designed for enhanced ergonomics and ease of use.
Additionally, a new three-spoke steering wheel is derived from the latest passenger car designs, with a simplified and improved control layout for the audio, telephony and cruise control functions.
Ford's SYNC®3 communications and entertainment system sees its first introduction in the range-topping Tourneo Custom Limited Automatic, allowing drivers to control audio functions and connected smartphones using simple, conversational voice commands.
SYNC®3 provides full smartphone integration through Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, including the option of using the phone's navigation apps. To keep the system up to date, periodic over-the-air software updates for SYNC®3 can be downloaded via Wi-Fi, once it is set up on a trusted wireless network.
On the Trend Automatic, a four-inch screen is supplied, using a simpler version of SYNC®3. On both systems, a total of eight USB ports are located throughout the cabin for charging mobile devices. An integrated 230v power socket is available as an optional item to power various devices, such as laptop computers, while on the move.
Everyday practicality has been given close attention, with significantly improved interior stowage including two lidded compartments on the upper instrument panel, and a generous stowage bin with twin cupholders in the centre console featuring a smart roller cover.
To give customers the ultimate flexibility in configuring and using the rear portion of the cabin, the Tourneo Custom offers six individual seats. The two rear rows can be configured in conference format for outstanding access and enhanced interaction between passengers, or in two rows of three forward-facing seats. Furthermore, the six seats can each be folded flat, tumbled, stowed in multiple positions or removed completely, enabling customers to create limousine-like space, maximise the luggage area or meet their own special business or lifestyle requirements.
Travelling comfort is further enhanced by new seat designs featuring revised foam padding and geometry for optimised support, plus improved refinement resulting from a significantly upgraded sound reduction package in the rear cabin. Rear seat passengers will also appreciate the more effective air conditioning system offering faster cooling or heating.
Throughout the vehicle, the interior trim has been updated with a focus on outstanding craftsmanship and appearance. The selection of more upscale materials, such as thick yarn fabrics and the availability of both light and dark interior environments in stylish, contemporary colours, reinforces the impression of quality and attention to detail within the cabin.
Exceptional safety and standard features
The Tourneo Custom boasts an extensive array of standard and optional safety features. In the event of a collision, occupants are protected with a full array of front, curtain and side impact airbags as standard fitment. This is complemented by active driving safety features including the Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) with Hill Launch Assist (HLA), Roll-Over Mitigation (ROM), Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) and Emergency Brake Assist (EBA). Additionally, Ford's Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) is fitted on both derivatives, which alerts the driver as soon as any tyre deflation is detected.
The extensive range of optional items, available on Trend and Limited models, includes front and rear parking sensors, a rear parking camera, Lane Keeping Aid and Lane Departure Warning, as well as the Blind Spot Detection System (BLIS) with Cross Traffic Alert and trailer coverage.
In place of the standard cruise control, customers can also opt for Ford's advanced Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), which uses a radar system to automatically maintain a set distance to the vehicle ahead.
Buyers can also select the enhanced lighting package that incorporates highly effective HID headlamps with LED daytime running lights.
The new automatic models are equipped as standard with 17-inch alloy wheels, while the existing manual derivatives retain 16-inch rims.
Colour choices comprise Frozen White, Race Red and Blazer Blue solid colours, along with a variety of attractive metallic options: Moondust Silver, Diffused Silver, Magnetic Grey, Orange Glow and Blue Metallic.

All models come standard with Ford Protect, comprising a four-year/120 000km comprehensive warranty, three-year/unlimited distance roadside assistance and five-year/unlimited km corrosion warranty. A six-year/90 000km service plan is included, with 15 000km service intervals.
