From 5 cylinders to 680 kW: The relentless evolution of Audi RS

Scan_Pay_Advertise_iloveza.com_2022

For more than four decades, high performance at Audi was relatively simple to define: an explosive internal-combustion engine, the distinct growl of a tuned exhaust, and the unwavering grip of quattro all-wheel drive. That formula built an enviable legacy, earning loyalty from drivers who measured emotion in revs and mechanical feedback.

Today, however, high-performance buyers are asking for more choice without wanting to compromise on character or intensity. Audi’s response is a performance line-up that spans hot hatches and sedans, high-riding SUVs and sweeping gran turismos. Standing firmly at the peak of this evolution is the new Audi RS e-tron GT performance.

A continuous pursuit of power

For Audi, true performance has never belonged to a single engine type or body shape. The current RS line-up in South Africa makes that particularly clear, bringing together vastly different expressions of performance, each engineered with the power, precision and intensity expected of the RS badge.

At one end of the spectrum, the RS 3 Sportback and Sedan celebrate the enduring appeal of Audi’s iconic five-cylinder turbocharged engine, delivering raw agility and an unmistakable mechanical soundtrack.

The RS Q8 performance, meanwhile, applies the same uncompromising approach to an entirely different proposition, combining the presence and practicality of a high-performance SUV with extraordinary pace and dynamic capability.

The upcoming, all-new 470 kW RS 5 introduces another dimension, using advanced plug-in hybrid technology to demonstrate how electrification can enhance performance rather than dilute it.

At the pinnacle, the RS e-tron GT performance takes that philosophy further still, showing that fully electric propulsion is not a departure from the RS philosophy, but another means of advancing it.

Across these vastly different interpretations of performance runs a familiar engineering thread. For decades, quattro all-wheel drive has been fundamental to the way Audi translates power into confidence, precision and control. As engines, powertrains and vehicle architectures have evolved, that pursuit of usable performance has remained central to the RS philosophy.

Engineering depth: Focus on the essentials

Standing at the head of this illustrious line-up, the new Audi RS e-tron GT performance elevates the conversation into an unprecedented dimension of speed and technology. It is a dedicated high-performance grand tourer that happens to be electric.

With Launch Control enabled, its dual electric motors produce up to 680 kW, making it the most powerful production Audi ever built and propelling it from 0 to 100 km/h in just 2.5 seconds.

Yet, true engineering depth is measured beyond straight-line acceleration. An advanced thermal-management system regulates the battery, electric motors and cabin temperature to support repeatable performance, while standard adaptive two-chamber air suspension continuously adjusts damping across all four wheels to deliver the precision and control expected of an RS flagship.

A dedicated Push-to-Pass function provides an additional 70 kW for up to 10 seconds, while the RS e-tron GT performance remains true to the gran turismo philosophy by combining formidable performance with long-distance capability. Its 97 kWh net battery provides a driving range of up to 592 km, supported by an 800-volt architecture capable of DC fast charging at up to 320 kW.

The result is significant not simply because it is electric, but because of what electrification has enabled Audi engineers to achieve. The RS e-tron GT performance demonstrates that as the technology behind performance evolves, the expectations attached to the RS badge do not.

Formula 1: The next chapter of Audi performance

That relentless pursuit of performance does not end with Audi’s road cars. It is now being taken into one of the most technically demanding environments in global motorsport: Formula 1.

As the pinnacle of motorsport, Formula 1 places extraordinary demands on powertrain performance, thermal management, energy recovery and efficiency. For Audi, it represents the ultimate proving ground for an engineering philosophy that has always sought to extract greater performance through technological progress.

The challenge may be more extreme, but the pursuit is familiar: finding new ways to make performance faster, more efficient, more precise and more capable.

Bringing RS performance to life in South Africa

While Formula 1 represents the most extreme expression of Audi’s performance ambitions, the Audi driving experience brings that philosophy closer to home. For South African drivers, it provides an opportunity to experience first-hand what the engineering behind the RS badge means when translated from specification sheets to the road and track.

Through dynamic handling exercises, high-speed braking and guided track sessions under expert instruction, participants experience the relationship between power, quattro capability, braking performance, precision and vehicle control.

It is here that the RS philosophy becomes tangible. Performance is not simply measured by kilowatts or acceleration figures, but by the confidence, control and exhilaration with which that performance can be accessed.

From the unmistakable character of a five-cylinder engine to the immediacy of 680 kW of electric performance, the technologies behind Audi RS continue to evolve. What remains constant is the ambition behind them: to extract greater performance through engineering, without compromising the precision, control and driver engagement that have defined the badge for decades.

As Audi takes that pursuit into Formula 1 and continues to bring it to South African drivers through the Audi driving experience, the next chapter of RS performance is already being written.
