From Forgotten to Family: TEARS Highlights Feral Cats Ready for Adoption
They may not be lap cats, but the ferals and semi-ferals at TEARS Animal Rescue are proving that with time, patience, and compassion, even the most timid cats can learn to trust again - and are ready for homes of their own.
Once too shy to approach anyone, cats like Ommi and Bebe, two striking long-haired calicos, now step out to greet caregivers, accept strokes, and even enjoy a gentle brush. Dobby, a ginger boy, has grown from hiding at the back of his enclosure to leaning into the touch of volunteers, while his bonded companions Robin and Lexy provide one another comfort and strength. Sylvester, a fluffy black-and-white giant, now happily licks fingers for treats, and even AB - once known only for hisses - has discovered the joy of chasing toys.
“These cats have come such a long way,” says TEARS Operations Manager, Mandy Store. “When they first arrived, most would only eat after the staff had left the room. Today, many of them come forward, rub against our legs, and even seek affection on their own terms. They may never be curled up on your lap, but they can absolutely thrive in the right homes.”
Feral and semi-feral cats are often misunderstood. While they may not always want cuddles, they make excellent companions for people with quiet homes, secure outdoor spaces, or catios. They also play a valuable role in farms and stables, where their natural instincts help keep rodent populations under control.
“Every cat deserves a chance, and ferals are no exception,” adds TEARS Co-Founder and Director, Marilyn Hoole. “With patience and respect for their boundaries, they become devoted companions in their own way. The bond you earn with a once-forgotten feral is something truly special.”
TEARS encourages prospective adopters to consider cats that may take longer to settle in. Some, like Ommi and Bebe, will blossom with time indoors before gradually exploring a garden. Others, like Dobby, Robin, and Lexy, thrive in bonded groups and should be adopted together. Likewise, AB and Sylvester adore each other and would be happiest if taken together.

ABOUT TEARS ANIMAL RESCUE:
TEARS is a pro-life, non-profit organisation established in 1999 (registered in terms of Section 18A of the Income Tax Act) whose core aim is to rescue, treat, rehabilitate, reunite, and rehome lost, abandoned, abused, and neglected companion animals and to educate pet owners and the youth living in the four under-resourced communities within which we operate.

TEARS remains the only facility in the Cape Peninsula’s far South available seven days per week, including an after-hours mobile clinic service from 4.30pm to 7pm with limited veterinary care. TEARS treat the hundreds of animals who need treatment each month for various conditions, illnesses, and injuries.
Our experience enables us to manage the population control of companion animals in these areas, based on available funding, and to reduce the spread of zoonoses as a means of supporting community health and complying to the WHO’s One Health approach to the animal-human interface.
We are partnered with community-based NGOs and community leaders to support vulnerable pets and pet owners living in the four core communities we are mandated to serve. Our Programmes aim to bring about systemic change through strategic interventions based on community involvement and support. Implementing effective animal welfare solutions in high-density and low-income communities has been proven to positively impact human welfare by delivering health, environmental, economic, educational, and social benefits.
