Spending the December holidays in Gauteng and not sure what to do? Tired of your old hang-out spots? Taroko Trail Park, situated within the Modderfontein Nature Reserve, is a mere 10km from Sandton & Waterfall City, easily accessible from the N3 at the Marlboro offramp or off the R25 from Greenstone. The park offers a long list of exciting activities for the whole family. Johannesburg’s weather during December is perfect for outdoor family activities, markets and festivals and this is exactly what Taroko offers, all within one venue.
Public Holiday 16 December:
Whether you’re a serious runner or jog just for fun, join us for our own specialised trial run. There are 5km, 10km and 21km trails available.
Social Events and Night Run:
Every Wednesday we offer night hiking, riding and running! Why not make a day of it, bring the whole family for a braai and take part in the night activities? We supply the braai and wood! You need not pay to participate in the night activities and only pay an entrance fee.
Hiking, Cycling and Running:
Our trails are also available every day of the week and comprise of the following:
- Hiking: 2-14km of hiking trails
- Trail Running: 5km and 10km. Well-marked and not technical, stroller friendly.
- Cycling Trails: 1km Kids/ 10km Orange Arrow/ 20km Green Arrow (most popular)/ 30km Yellow Arrow/ 40km Red Arrow
Guided Night Hikes:
Even though you’re in the city, you are able to appreciate the starry night sky during our guided night hikes.
Fishing:
Bring your fishing rod along and try your luck in the Fish Eagle Dam.
Christmas Market and Farmers Market:
Have you done your Christmas shopping yet? Throughout December we will host a Christmas Market while our Fourways Famers Market will also be in full swing during weekends to look after your foodie needs.
Picnics:
Is your home too small to host family and friends for festive celebrations? Our picnic areas with braai facilities are perfect for families and large groups.
The Modderfontein Nature Reserve is home to a number of animals including steenbok, reedbuck, duiker, black-backed jackals, Cape clawless otter, hedgehogs, and four varieties of mongoose. Another of the Reserve’s highlights is its abundance of bird species. Over 250 species have been recorded including fish eagles, long-crested eagles, jackal buzzards and crimson-breasted shrikes, amongst others. Bird hides have been constructed in the Reserve and visitors are able to access these from the walking trails.
The reserve and trails are safe and secure with 24/7 security fence patrolling and roaming rangers on site, making sure you can be at ease and relax when on the trails.
Taroko is open every day 6:00-18:00 and Wednesdays from 6:00-21:00.
