Graffiti Artists to go Head to Head at Newtown Junction Mall
On 8 June, at Newtown Junction Mall we will be hosting an epic contest where three top South African graffiti artists will battle it out for the opportunity to become the Newtown Graffiti Face-Off Master.
More than 50 graffiti artists have submitted their work for a graffiti competition hosted by Newtown Junction Mall in Johannesburg’s inner city. Judges will select three artists to battle it out for first place on 8 June 2017 and the conquering graffiti artist will be named ‘Newtown Junction Graffiti Face-Off Master’.
Newtown Junction Mall Marketing Manager, Thato Maila says Newtown is the arts, culture and fashion hub of Johannesburg. “The neighbourhood is characterised by a vibrant street culture with many walls sporting works by some of the country’s most talented graffiti artists like Mr.Eksê. This is why running a graffiti competition made so much sense to us.”
The face-off will see the three artists develop their masterpieces within a three-hour limit. These will then be posted on various social media platforms where their fate will be left in the hands of the public. The artist with the most votes will ultimately get to make his or her mark on two full-size walls at the mall.
“In addition to creating considerable excitement on social media, the competition has presented the opportunity for graffiti artists to be recognised and showcase their talent. As a bonus, Newtown Junction Mall to become an even livelier and more colourful space,” says Maila.
