During these past weeks, the finalists have been hard at work in preparation for what is set to be life-changing night for one girl. The Miss Soweto 2017 pageant is set to take place at the Soweto Theatre on the 25th of November 2017.

The top 20 finalists will be walking the stage accompanied by international songstress Monique Bingham as the evening’s headline entertainment. Vusi Kunene, a legend in the South African film and television industry, will be the host of the evening. Well-known for his role as the villain Jack Mabaso in SABC 1’s Generations, Vusi will be bringing charm and charisma to the Miss Soweto stage.

In the lead up to the final event, the Top 20 finalists have been going through extensive training, under the guidance of White Star, along with other key partners and sponsors of the pageant.

“This year, we have partnered with much-loved local brands, as well as well-known international companies, industry experts and media personalities, who are all bringing their professional expertise and passion to the pageant,” says Mokhele Makhothi, White Star’s Marketing Manager.  “These partners have assisted the girls in preparing for the finale - with professional coaching on and off the stage, extensive rehearsals and public appearances, grooming them for that title that will go to one of these amazing young women.”

The top 20 finalists have benefited from workshops presented by Grace Mantjiu, the beauty editor at BONA magazine and one of the judges for this year’s pageant, who coached the ladies on positive body language and fashion and beauty advice. Mapaseka Koetle, pageant judge and eTV Scandal actress educated the finalists on the role of an ambassador and being a public figure, while Clinix Health Group offered health and wellness training. Full service advertising agency, Matriarch, trained the girls in the area of interview skills, public speaking and voice modulation.

“The Miss Soweto pageant is not only about empowering and changing the lives of the young women who participate, it takes a holistic approach to impact communities positively and build a greater South Africa,” adds Makhothi.

Part of the finalists’ journey ahead of the finale included making a charitable contribution to the communities in Soweto.  The ladies visited among other charities, Ikageng Itereleng AIDS Ministry and Themlinkosi Aftercare, to spend time with the children and assist in preparing food for them. They also made a stop at Nka Thuto Primary School, to join Hape Moloi, Miss Soweto 2012, for a book handover. White Star Instant Maize Porridge stock was also donated at these stops, making sure the children have a heart-warming breakfast in an instant.

On the 4th of November, the Top 20 finalists spent their day interacting and having fun with the community members around the various landmarks in Soweto, including Maponya Mall, Vilakazi Street and Dorothy Nyembe. They were in high-sprits as they encouraged everyone to attend the finale in support of the ladies, as the new Soweto ambassador is chosen.

Says Makhothi “the Miss Soweto pageant has been around for almost four decades and we always make sure each year is greater than the previous one. The road to the finals ensures that these ladies are well-prepared and equipped with the appropriate skills to shine in confidence at the finale. We are helping build women who will shine long after the pageant ends. We look forward to welcoming everyone for what is set to be a spectacular event.”
