Mugg & Bean has committed to raise funds for Childhood Cancer Awareness Month through its Muffins for Kids with Cancer initiative.

From 3  September to 3 October, the company will donate  R5 for each giant muffin purchased by customers to Cupcakes of Hope, a non-profit organisation that aims to raise awareness and funds for families in need of medical assistance.

Currently, between 800 and 1 000 South African children are diagnosed with cancer annually. Many childhood cancers are treatable, with success rates of between 70% and 80% in well-resourced countries. According to the South African Medical Journal, the overall survival rate for childhood cancer in South Africa remains low when compared to international data.

Mugg & Bean hopes to increase access to treatment for children with cancer and play a part in improving the overall survival rate.

“Approximately 80% of children with cancer in Africa have no access to adequate care. In line with our passion for inspiring generous living, we have committed to helping children with cancer in order to reduce these shocking numbers,”

says Thulani Mahlangu, Brand Manager, at Mugg & Bean.

Mugg & Bean has supported Cupcakes of Hope since 2012. Last year, Muffins for Kids with Cancer was launched to help raise funds for Little Giants like four-year-old Olwethu, who dreams of being a fashion designer, and three-year-old animal lover, Kajal.

“We would like to encourage Mugg & Bean’s customers to support the initiative by buying muffins to help children with cancer. The capital raised will go a long way to ensuring that many children get to see their 18th birthday,”

says Sandy Cipriano, founder of Cupcakes of Hope.

Customers can choose from an assortment of giant muffins at any Mugg & Bean in South Africa to contribute towards the initiative. For patrons who are trying to be healthier, Mugg & Bean has introduced a new low-carb, sugar-free muffin.

Mugg & Bean customers can also donate towards the initiative on the Mugg & Bean Generosity App, which can be downloaded on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.
