Why wearing a mask is important?
We have been informed by the WHO and other reputable medical authorities, that this virus is carried and transmitted through when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or speaks to you whilst in close proximity.
The disease may also be transferred when these airborne particles land on the surfaces which you may touch, and then transfer to your face from your hands.
Wearing a mask helps to reduce transmission by not only providing a physical barrier to airborne infection, but also importantly reducing infection from your hands onto your mouth.
It is not enough to just sanitize our hands, we need to practice to stop touching our faces. Wearing a mask and glasses can assist with this.
A mask also helps to protect others around you, should you cough or sneeze, by helping to contain particles emitted.
Masks offer you some protection in both these circumstances and should be used as part of a comprehensive protection plan including social distancing (keep 2m between yourself and others when out in public), frequent hand washing, sanitizing, and maintaining a healthy immune system.
What are Mzansi Masks?
Mzansi masks are carefully designed and made to offer the maximum protection possible from a non-surgical grade product.
Each mask is made from 3 layers of materials chosen to provide comfort and protection. The masks are washable and should, for maximum hygiene and safety, be used once, and then washed before being used again.
The mask is shaped to fit snugly over the bridge of the nose and close to the jawline under the chin. Since the mask is a barrier between your nose and mouth and airborne particles in the atmosphere, it is important to ensure that it fits as tightly as possible to your face.
The elastic ear straps should be adjusted – by tying tighter, if you feel the mask is sitting too loosely. The front shape of the mask is designed to create an airspace under your nose to make breathing easier whilst the edges of the mask fit snugly around your face, ensuring the air you are breathing filters through the mask and not around the edges.
What materials are used?
The materials used in the masks are chosen to be non-absorbent (like the medical masks), and will not hold moisture against the skin. This is important for hygiene reasons.
Mzansi Masks are made of three non-absorbent and low absorbency materials. The outer layer is a high polyester content Poly Cotton blend. The lining is a dense non-woven textile made of polyester fibre, and the middle layer is also a dense non-woven polyester fibre material.
Fitting a mask correctly
The masks have a distinctive inverted “V” shape. Be sure to fit your mask correctly by placing the point of the “V” on the bridge of your nose, hook the straps over your ears and pull the lower edge of the mask under your chin. The mask should fit snugly around the edges with no opening. Tighten the ear straps by knotting to adjust and personalize the fit for your face. When worn, the mask should be comfortable but close to the face.
The children's masks are suitable for ages 3 to 8 years.
Care Guidelines
Your Mzansi Masks are washable and reusable.
A 40 degree machine wash and tumble or line dry is recommended. The product is not designed to withstand bleach, but may be disinfected if necessary. Alternatively it can be soaked and washed by hand in hot, soapy water to which you could add disinfectant.
For maximum hygiene and health, it is recommended to replace with a clean mask after each use.
When removing the mask from your face, be sure not to touch the fabric, but remove the mask by holding the elastic ear straps, and place directly into the washing machine.
Wash your hands directly after handling a used mask.
You should replace the mask when the lining becomes worn, torn or discoloured.
