Imagine battling icy Atlantic waters, the historic silhouette of Robben Island receding behind you, dressed in nothing but your speedos.
This May, a formidable team of nine individuals, known as Currents For Cause, are undertaking this very challenge – a gruelling 7.5km swim from Robben Island to Blouberg Beach in Cape Town, South Africa.
Their audacious mission, braving potentially treacherous conditions between the 14 May (weather permitting), is to shine a powerful light on the often-silent pandemic of Men's Mental Health and raise vital funds for the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG).
These aren't just any swimmers; they are nine friends from in and around the Western Cape, united by a deep-seated concern for the Wellbeing of men across South Africa and beyond. Currents For Cause are aiming to raise R70,000.00 to directly support SADAG's crucial 24-hour Toll Free Suicide Crisis Helpline.
This lifeline provides immediate support, counselling, and referrals for individuals grappling with Mental Health challenges, emotional distress, and crisis situations. Every stroke they take in the icy ocean is a testament to their unwavering commitment to breaking the stigma surrounding Men's Mental Health and ensuring that help is always just a phone call away.
"We are just under 2 weeks away until our swim, and we have been working exceptionally hard towards achieving our goal. From dealing with 10 degree water in Clifton to 6km swims through False Bay channels. We have received great support thus far and we would like to encourage everyone to continue supporting us to help us achieve our goals",
said Currents for Cause representative, Niall Maloney.
The unfortunate reality is that men often suffer in silence with Mental Health issues, which could lead to a significant decline in their overall Wellbeing, impacting their relationships, work, and quality of life. Currents For Cause are determined to make a difference, pushing their physical and mental limits in the cold waters to amplify this critical message. By enduring this extreme challenge, they hope to inspire open conversations, encourage men to seek support without shame, and contribute directly to the vital services SADAG provides. Their journey, filled with training swims and unwavering dedication, is a powerful demonstration of solidarity and a call to action for a cause that affects us all.
