PAN AFRICA ILGA ANNOUNCES THE PAI 5TH REGIONAL CONFERENCE 2021

PAN AFRICA ILGA ANNOUNCES THE PAI 5TH REGIONAL CONFERENCE 2021
CONFERENCE TITLE: ‘Reclaiming Our Past – Defining Our Future’
An exciting and dynamic Conference led by the Pan Africa ILGA (International Lesbian Gay Bisexual Trans and Intersex Association) is coming to Johannesburg, and shall be held virtually across the continent and the world.
The conference is taking place from FRIDAY 27 AUGUST to TUESDAY 31 AUGUST 2021. More than 500 delegates have signed up for the Conference, to engage in plenaries, workshops, films and arts and culture events. Registration is necessary. These events will involve more than 100 speakers from across the continent.
“We would never normally be able to meet with people from all five regions, particularly regions where there is incredible repression. This event allows for stronger regions – regions that have won some rights – to share stories about their advocacy and strategies for bringing about change in their own countries,” says PAI Executive Director Nate Brown.
The theme is Reclaiming our Past: Defining our Future and will have plenary sessions covering topics such as: The Effects of the Pandemic on our Communities; Breaking the Silence on Mental Health; Decriminalisation Within and Beyond the Law; Religion and our Sexualities; and Embracing Social Justice by considering the Intersectionality of our Struggles.
There will also be 19 satellite sessions spread across 3 days where delegates can hold conversations on: funding for social justice movements; the SDGs and LGBTIQ+ inclusion; queering sex education; among other incredible conversations. This will be a space for engagement, sharing and learning.
Pan Africa ILGA, known as PAI, has offices in Johannesburg and operates as a network of more than 250 organisations from all five regions across the African continent. The organisation aims to improve human rights of individuals on all grounds, including sexual orientation, gender identity and expression and sex characteristics.
The Conference will be held at Constitution Hill in Johannesburg. A most significant venue as the South African Constitution was the first in the world to prohibit all unfair discrimination on the basis of sex, gender, or sexual orientation.
