Pioneering Advances in OCD Treatment Are Coming to South Africa

South Africa is set to become part of a growing international movement in the treatment of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), with the introduction of the internationally recognised Bergen 4-Day Treatment (B4DT). To mark this exciting development, South Africans will have the opportunity to hear directly from the founders of B4DT, Dr Bjarne Hansen and Dr Thröstur Björgvinsson, during a Free Live Webinar taking place on Tuesday, 4 August 2026 at 7pm.

Dr Bjarne Hansen has been recognised by TIME Magazine as one of the "50 People Transforming Health Care", while Dr Thröstur Björgvinsson is Co-Director of the OCD & Anxiety Program of Southern California. During the webinar, they will explain the principles behind B4DT and how this treatment is changing the way OCD can be treated. Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) can have a serious impact on a person's daily life and can affect people of all ages. Traditional treatment often takes months or even years. B4DT offers a different approach. It is an intensive, evidence-based treatment that takes place over four consecutive days. The programme focuses on Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), active participation, and helping people take back control of their lives from OCD.

Research on B4DT has shown encouraging results. More than 90% of patients have shown reliable improvement, 69% have maintained their recovery after four years, positive results have been seen in adults, teenagers and children, and the treatment continues to expand to more countries around the world. B4DT is currently available in countries including the United States, Sweden, Iceland, Finland, Germany, Norway, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, Belgium, Turkey, Ecuador, Brazil, Argentina and Denmark. South Africa is expected to join this international network in the near future.

The webinar will give people living with OCD, parents, families, Mental Health professionals, educators and anyone interested in learning more about OCD the chance to hear directly from the experts who developed this treatment. It is also an important step towards bringing B4DT to South Africa and increasing access to intensive, evidence-based treatment for people living with OCD and related difficulties.

The webinar is free, online and open to everyone. Whether you are living with OCD, supporting a loved one, a parent or family member, a Mental Health professional, or simply interested in learning more, you are welcome to attend. There is no audience participation required. Attendees can simply listen, learn and submit questions during the Q&A if they wish.
