On Friday, September 29th,  there were 5 young designers eagerly awaiting their turn to present their respective designer vision to a panel of esteemed judges.

They each not only had to motivate, but demonstrate why they should be selected to be part of the 2018 Durban Fashion Fair Mentorship Programme presented by the eThekwini Municipality as well as win the other prizes up for grabs.

24-year-old Durbanite, Hayley Richards walked off with second place with R3 000 going towards a sewing machine of her choice, an exhibition space at the 2018 Durban Fashion Fair and a guaranteed spot in the 2018 DFF mentorship programme. Her storyboard theme was all about cross-functional dressing, targeting the professional business woman with inspiration from the classic suit and tie.

Impressing the panel of judges, Zama Mathe, Laduma Ngxokolo, Nthato Mashishi, Lindiwe Kuzwayo and Mikaelah Patterson, and taking first place, was the very charming 18-year-old Siyathokoza Zulu.

Originally hailing from Margate and now based in Durban, Zulu presented her design vision featuring a street style women’s wear range entitled 50 shades of Black.  Zulu not only walked off with R5000 going towards a sewing machine, a spot within the mentorship programme, and an exhibition space, but she also gets a clothing rail to feature and sell her designs at the DFF Emporium which is based at the Umlazi Mega City.

Both were ecstatic with their prizes and cannot wait for the 2018 Mentorship programme to begin in order for them learn and empower themselves regarding the Business of Fashion.
