Siyajabula was founded in 1998, and is now home to 42 orphans. Eunice Mweli, the founder of the home, was previously a teacher, but quit her job to dedicate her life to looking after a number of orphans at her NPO, Siyajabula Centre, which initially started when she took in disabled twins whose mother had suddenly passed away, leaving the children orphaned.
Megan Duggan, a Hairdresser by profession and the Volunteer Manager for Siyajabula, was responsible for arranging the visit and has been part of the Centre for 3 years, with the help of her husband, children and group of volunteers that assist on a daily basis. She not only assisted in arranging the visit to uShaka with the help of a friend, but also arranged busses and drivers from Curro Hillcrest to help transport the children to the Park.
“My husband and I have always had a heart for the poor and after instantly creating a bond with Ma Eunice, we have now dedicated our lives to assisting the children at Siyajabula, where we can. I am so grateful for the assistance of uShaka Marine World, Curro Hillcrest and my 20 volunteers who made this day possible. These children may not enjoy abundance but are much loved by those who take care of them. All of our children are very appreciative for what they receive and this visit was such a blessing to them,” she said.
On the day, all the children were treated to an aquarium tour, seal show, dolphin show, and lunch as well as enjoyed time at the new kiddie’s pool within Wet ‘n Wild.
After all the activities, gifts were then handed to each child and they then got to enjoy more of Wet ‘n Wild before heading off back to the home.
“We here at uShaka Marine World work closely with charities as part of our CSI strategy. We are truly taken aback by Eunice Mweli and all that she does to help these children and we wanted to share the gift of giving with them. It has definitely been a rewarding experience for all,” said Mpume Mthembu (Marketing Executive at uShaka Marine World).
Siyajabula Centre are always looking for donations and are also in need of basic essentials. If you are able to make a donation or can assist in any way possible, please contact Megan Duggan 084 449 5051 or email her on meg@pul.co.za.
