Skin Care Hacks for a Radiant Summer Complexion

Summer is almost around the corner and we all know that means short shorts, mini skirts and hair tied. I’m a winter girl so I’m not at all excited about anything apart from the fun that Summer brings. Like I said, summer comes with a lot of fun. and the last thing you want holding you back is your skin! While this might happen and could be tedious to deal with it, it can be fixed. The best part is you can fix it with things already in your kitchen!
Like I always say, I’m a DIY kinda gal. I just find it fascinating that I can treat myself using things I eat! Haters will say you’re wasting food. But, I say you’re saving money and yourself from toxic chemicals. Without further rambling, let’s get into it.
SUMMER SKIN CARE HACK #1 – SMELLY FEET
Our bodies generally perspire a lot more in summer than we do in winter. Perspiration can happen everywhere, including your feet. You don’t want to be the one that makes people gag everytime you remove your shoes. Although there are multiple ways in which you can sorts take care of smelly feet. My personal favorites include using 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar and water. Soak your feet in mixture for 15-20 mins, twice a day.
SUMMER SKIN CARE HACK #2 – UNPREDICTABLE PIMPLES
It’s not until you have a huge event to go to, that you wake up with a huge zit on your face. If this happens to you, 3 things: Green tea, rooibos tea and raw honey. These are one my favorite because they are effective and accessible. Cleanse your face as you normally would. Proceed to apply a warm compress using either green or rooibos tea. These teas are antibacterial as well as anti-inflammatories. End by applying some raw honey on the pimple and watch Gaia do her work. Do this after each cleansing session.
SUMMER SKIN CARE HACK #3 – FOOT BLISTERS
I love hiking in the summer time, the sun is nasty but sore blisters are nastier. Combat this by investing in some pure aloe Vera gel. This miracle plant is one of my favorite home remedies, simply because it’s so versatile. The plant is an anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal and anti-bacterial among a host of other things. Submerge your feet in sea-salt water (not table salt) and apply gel. A good substitute if you don’t have aloe Vera, could be raw honey.
SUMMER SKIN CARE HACK #4 – GETTING BURNT BY THE SUN
i always advise on the importance of applying sunscreen. But even sunscreen can’t protect you from being burnt; only from the Rays. If you find yourself having been burnt by the sun, two things: yogurt and aloe Vera. I already confes9sed my love for the miracle that is aloe Vera. But plain yogurt with active cultures is also a great pick. Gently apply yogurt to burnt area and allow it to soothe and gently exfoliate your skin. Do this twice a day and thank me later!
SUMMER SKIN CARE HACK #5 – EXCESSIVELY OILY SKIN
if you know you have oily skin, this one is for you. It is imperative to always keep blotting sheets. This stops you from wiping your fave with your hands (which is very filthy and will cause breakouts). If you’re having a bad day, and you realise you’ve run out or forgot them at home, two words: hand towels. You know the ones available in public bathrooms? The ones you use to put on the seat before you sit on it? Yeah. Run and grab one of those from your nearest public toilet and you are sorted! If you’re at home and have run out, running your face under cold-ish water will do you justice!
SUMMER SKIN CARE HACK #6 – GETTING RID OF BLACK HEADS
if you frequently get blackheads, you need to make egg-whites and raw honey your friends. Egg-whites are protein rich and have the ability to control oil production and get rid of blackheads. Start by cleansing your face, before applying a layer of raw honey with a clean makeup brush. Allow mask to dry before rinsing off with lukewarm water. Raw honey can also be applied. Sit with raw honey for 15 minutes before steaming your face over some hot water and rinse.
SUMMER SKIN CARE HACK #7 – TONING SKIN
Toning is probably the most skipped step in a skin care regimen in spite of its importance. Toning should balance your skins pH to allow your skin to perform at its optimum. Let go of cleansers which contain fragrance, alcohol or citrus fruits. If you’re sensitive, apple cider vinegar is also not for you. A simple toner recipe should be both balancing and moisturising. Ingredients such as rosewater are ideal, because they reduce redness and balance the skin’s pH.
SUMMER SKIN CARE HACK #8 – DRY LIPS
You know what, this is both a winter and summer problem. Our skin tends to get dehydrated in summer and needs to be replenished. The best way to do this is to scrub your lips using olive oil and sugar and/or Himalayan salt. You don’t want the mixture runny; grainy is the answer. After scrubbing your lips, slice some cucumbers and let them sit on your lips for 10 mins. Cucumbers are very hydrating and will do exactly that for your lips. End by applying raw honey and let it also sit for 10 mins before wiping off. What I LOVE about raw honey is that it’s a humectant. This means that it draws moisture from the atmosphere into your skin. This assures that your lips stay moist throughout the day.
SUMMER SKIN CARE HACK #9 – CRACKED FEET
Nobody wants to be wearing sneakers in summer. If you’re trying on your favorite gladiators and your feet are looking a little crusty, 3 things: carrier oil, course Himalayan salt/sugar, warm water. Mix olive oil and Himalayan salt or sugar to create a grainy scrub. Dip your feet in warm water and scrub gently before rinsing. Use deep-moisturising carrier oil to Moisturise your feet before applying socks.
SUMMER SKIN CARE HACK #10 – RADIATING SKIN
Have fun! Summer is all about fun and even though I love winter, I cannot deny that. Drink lots of water, eat delicious fruit and stay active. There’s nothing better than that. At the end of the day, beauty radiates from the inside out. So, do whatever feeds your self-growth and the rest will definitely follow.
