South African Documentary “Hearts Remember” Set to Screen on World Alzheimer’s Day
The highly anticipated South African documentary “Hearts Remember” (Pelo ya hopola) will officially premiere in South Africa on September 21, 2026, coinciding with World Alzheimer’s Day.
The film was recently presented at the International Alzheimer’s Association Conference in London this past July.
Directed by award-winning filmmaker Paul Modjadji, “Hearts Remember” explores the realities of dementia and aging in contemporary South Africa. Through powerful narratives from individuals living with dementia, their families, caregivers, experts, and community leaders, the documentary provides an intimate look at their journeys from diagnosis to daily management of the illness.
The film features compelling stories, including that of iconic South African soccer coach Clive Barker, who shares his experience with Lewy body dementia, and Marinda Breedt, who reveals her journey with Alzheimer’s. Additionally, TikToker Nduduzo Kay and his grandmother, Zithi Elisabeth Khoza, who has lived with dementia for five years, are also prominently featured.
Producer Wandile Molebatsi expressed the film’s impact, stating, “Stories have a way of helping us understand things we might not always know how to talk about. They can make us feel, ask questions, and provide new perspectives. We are thrilled that Ster-Kinekor and some of our local tv planforms share in our passion for educational films and value the impact they can have in society. I’ve witnessed the power of storytelling to create connections.” At the screening, there will be Q&A sessions with experts and health advocates, offering audiences the chance to learn more and engage in meaningful discussions.
Research indicates that approximately 450,000 people currently live with dementia in South Africa, with projections suggesting that this number could rise to one million by 2050. “Hearts Remember” aims to raise awareness and humanize a condition often misunderstood in many communities, featuring heartfelt stories that illustrate how families navigate aging and cognitive health challenges, according to director Paul Modjadji.
Prolific poet and newly appointed UNFPA Youth Champion for Women and Girls, Botlhale Boikanyo, emphasized the importance of the project, saying, “Our grandparents play a significant role in shaping who we are. By screening these powerful films about aging and cognitive health, we hope to foster awareness, understanding, and protection for the elderly.”
The documentary also features TV and film icon Abigail Kubeka, who shares her insights on aging and cognitive health.
The primary goal of “Hearts Remember” is to elevate dementia advocacy in South Africa while dismantling myths and misconceptions about cognitive degenerative illnesses. “This film is vital for advocating for the rights and care of our elderly. In our culture, we are taught to revere the elderly and appreciate the aging process. We hope this film inspires both younger generations and the elderly to recognize the beauty of aging and all that it encompasses,” the director added.
“Hearts Remember” is made possible through the generous funding of The Alzheimer’s Association.
Globally, over 57 million people were estimated to live with dementia as of 2021, with nearly 10 million new cases reported each year, according to the World Health Organization.
The complimentary screening will take place at South Gate Ster Kinekor on Monday, September 21, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM.
