Each week SPOTLIGHT ON… shines a light on an exceptional South African entertainer who is currently “living the dream” internationally, and flying the SA flag high for us. This week it will be Edward Baker-Duly, live from Hampshire, England.
Born in Sweden, growing up in Ethiopia and London before settling in South Africa, all before the age of 5, Edward Baker-Duly made his theatre debut at just 12 in The Tales of Hans Christian Andersen.
He hasn’t stopped working since!
He notched up impressive South African theatre and TV credits including Honeytown, Me & My Girl, Joseph & His Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, A Chorus Line, West Side Story, Oklahoma and Crazy For You.
While at the height of his popularity in South Africa, Edward's intrepid nature and the constant need to challenge himself artistically took him off to London where he made his West End Debut in Salad Days.
His time in England, then New York for a period and now back in England, Edward has been in constant demand and become a firm favourite for TV, film and theatre directors alike including Trevor Nunn.
Showcasing his extreme versatility and talent in all forms of singing, dancing and acting, Edward’s credits extend from appearing in hit TV shows like Billions, Royal Pains, Downton Abbey, Emmerdale, Upstairs Downstairs and more, to films like De-Lovely alongside Kevin Kline.
His international theatre credits are just as impressive, including South Pacific, Kiss Me Kate, Noises Off, The King & I, The Wizard of Oz and most recently, Bridges of Madison County and How The Grinch Stole Christmas.
Edward Baker-Duly is true testament to the fact that if you take that leap of faith, work hard at your craft and strive to keep challenging yourself, then anything is possible! A star that continues to rise!
Says Co-Producer Collett Dawson; “Edward is a delight to watch – whether it’s on stage, on TV or film screens; his stage presence, extreme talent and versatility undoubtedly sets him apart. His focus, discipline and sheer determination to tackle any challenge head on only adds to that, and I’m thrilled he’s spending time with us on Spotlight On… to share his amazing stories with our viewers.”
Baker-Duly responds; “I’m thrilled to be taking a trip down memory lane, back to where it all began..."
