TEARS Animal Rescue desperately needs fleece blankets to keep animals warm after the floods, please help!

Last week’s heavy rains flooded TEARS Animal Rescue at their premises in Lekkerwater Road, Sunnydale. Their offices and kennel property was badly flooded as the drainage infrastructure gave way under the deluge of water.
TEARS spokesperson, Tinka Shapiro, says,
“Thanks to the fast action and support of our community, we were able to prevent a disaster. Our priority is always to take care for our animals and we managed to do that. However, we are now desperately in need of resources like fleece blankets or fleece fabric to keep them warm.”
“We are so grateful to the NSRI teams from Simon’s Town, Hout Bay and Kommetjie who stepped in to pump the flood water out of the kennels. They made all the difference and we cannot thank them enough. Our drainage system failed and we are now raising money to connect to the municipal sewer line to prevent future disasters. The cost of this is estimated to be R300 000,”
she says.
“However, we are also calling on the public to please donate fleece blankets or fabric to help us keep our animals comfortable and warm or to donate money to help us buy these essential blankets.”
Fleece blankets are important to animal welfare as they are warm and cosy and can even keep animals warm when wet. They also dry very quickly.
“This was not just a rainy day it was a crisis for our animals, staff and shelter. Caring for our animals is always our main focus and we are doing everything we can to keep them warm. Donations of fleece blankets or fabric will really help us to achieve this,”
she says.

ABOUT TEARS ANIMAL RESCUE:
TEARS is a pro-life, non-profit organisation established in 1999 (registered in terms of Section 18A of the Income Tax Act) whose core aim is to rescue, treat, rehabilitate, reunite, and rehome lost, abandoned, abused, and neglected companion animals and to educate pet owners and the youth living in the four under-resourced communities within which we operate.

TEARS remains the only facility in the Cape Peninsula’s far South available seven days per week, including an after-hours mobile clinic service from 4.30pm to 7pm with limited veterinary care. TEARS treat the hundreds of animals who need treatment each month for various conditions, illnesses, and injuries.
Our experience enables us to manage the population control of companion animals in these areas, based on available funding, and to reduce the spread of zoonoses as a means of supporting community health and complying to the WHO’s One Health approach to the animal-human interface.
We are partnered with community-based NGOs and community leaders to support vulnerable pets and pet owners living in the four core communities we are mandated to serve. Our Programmes aim to bring about systemic change through strategic interventions based on community involvement and support. Implementing effective animal welfare solutions in high-density and low-income communities has been proven to positively impact human welfare by delivering health, environmental, economic, educational, and social benefits.
