“We have been thrilled by the extraordinary welcome given to our production of The Color Purple by the public and media alike,” enthuses Joburg City Theatres’ Chief Executive Officer, Xoliswa Nduneni-Ngema. “The citizens of Joburg have taken this wonderful show to their hearts and, most excitingly, the women in our audiences have joyously embraced its underlying themes of gender empowerment and equality. So we will continue the celebration of The Color Purple for Women’s Month in South Africa and give many more theatre-goers the opportunity to share this unique experience”.

The additional performances will be at Joburg Theatre from August 7th to 26th 2018. These will include seven special students-only daytime performances for youngsters aged 13 and over to join together in discovering the treasures and lessons to be learned from this musical adaptation of Alice Walkers’ 1983 Pulitzer prize-winning novel. Evening performances on August 8th, 16th and 23rd will be sold at 2-for-the-price-of-1 in order to give even greater accessibility to Joburg audiences.

“This all-South African production of The Color Purple has been a huge career highlight for me,” says executive producer Bernard Jay. “I have been overwhelmed by the love and acclaim that Janice Honeyman’s brilliant staging has received. What better gift now than to know public demand for tickets has created additional performances at Joburg Theatre whilst we finalise negotiations for a worldwide tour of our production in 2019/20”.

The book for the musical The Color Purple is written by Marsha Norman with music and lyrics by Brenda Russell, Allee Willis and Stephen Bray. It is based upon the novel written by Alice Walker and the Warner Bros/Amblin Entertainment Motion Picture directed by Steven Spielberg.
