The Dream Becomes Reality: Global Testing Programme Begins For Project Nightingale, A Coachbuild Collection

Scan_Pay_Advertise_iloveza.com_2022
  • Project Nightingale enters a testing programme as audacious and unconstrained as the motor car itself
  • 350 collective weeks of testing will perfect a Coachbuild Collection limited to just 100 client motor cars
  • Programme begins in Southern Europe, where Rolls-Royce endurance testing began
  • Prototypes undergo 1,430 hours of aerodynamic modelling and wind tunnel testing
  • Piano Boot to complete 15,000 opening and closing cycles to ensure generational effortlessness

“Project Nightingale captures the same audacious spirit that drove Sir Henry Royce to build his experimental ‘EX’ motor cars in the 1920s: a desire to discover what Rolls-Royce is truly capable of, unconstrained by convention. Few motor cars in the marque’s history have asked so much of those who create them. That is why Project Nightingale is being tested with the same rigour with which it was imagined. The programme begins on the roads of Europe, where Rolls-Royce first proved itself to the world a century ago, before continuing across every climate in which our clients may choose to drive. Every detail is being refined to an extraordinary degree, down to the sound of the Piano Boot closing after 15,000 operating cycles. Nothing less would be worthy of the brand, or this truly exceptional motor car.”
Chris Brownridge, Chief Executive, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars

In April 2026, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars announced Project Nightingale , a Coachbuild Collection of just 100 client motor cars. Combining the complete design freedom of coachbuilding with the marque’s uncompromising all-electric powertrain, Project Nightingale represents the most extravagant expression of what Rolls-Royce is capable of today and a tantalising view of what the future holds. From the moment the project was presented, commissioning clients were emphatic: these motor cars would be driven and enjoyed around the world. Preparing Project Nightingale for those journeys would require Rolls-Royce to go to extraordinary lengths, subjecting prototypes to one of the most rigorous testing programmes in the marque’s history.

Rolls-Royce engineers will devote 350 collective weeks to proving Project Nightingale at the extremes of where and how its clients intend to drive. Prototype motor cars will journey from Mediterranean corniches and the Arctic Circle to the deserts of the Arabian Peninsula, enduring temperature extremes and altitudes of up to 2,750 metres.

The programme begins in Southern Europe, returning Project Nightingale to the roads where Rolls-Royce established its meticulous approach to motor car development more than 100 years ago. In Southern France, the connection is particularly profound: Project Nightingale takes its name from Le Rossignol – French for ‘the nightingale’ – the name of the house Henry Royce built for his designers and engineers near his own winter home on the French Riviera. At the beginning of the 20th century, Rolls-Royce’s engineers would subject motor cars to relentless speed and durability testing from this base and the marque’s test facility in Châteauroux, as well as on the roads between Monte Carlo and London. More than a century later, Project Nightingale continues this tradition, applying the same exacting rigour to a motor car which is unlike any Rolls-Royce that has come before it.

The on-road programme marks the latest phase of a development journey that began almost three years ago. Static prototypes have already completed more than 1,430 hours of aerodynamic modelling, including advanced digital simulations and wind tunnel testing. The results of this exhaustive laboratory-based work will be validated at a private high-speed testing facility, where Project Nightingale will reach speeds of up to 155 mph. Here, the motor cars will also undergo extensive analysis to suppress wind noise until it is barely perceptible, preserving the peerless combination of potency, serenity and absolute effortlessness that defines this Coachbuild Collection.

The same obsessive attention extends to the movement of air within the motor car. Rolls-Royce has developed a fully electric wind deflector specifically for Project Nightingale, exquisitely engineered and beautifully resolved to prevent high-pressure air from looping forward into the interior suite from behind. During the programme, it will be tested at a range of speeds to reduce already minimal levels of interior turbulence, while helping to retain warmth when the motor car is driven in colder climates with its roof lowered.

This determination to preserve the motor car’s exceptional refinement in almost any environment extends to the roof itself. Lined with unique sound-deadening material combining cashmere, fabric and high-performance composites, the roof will undergo 10 separate tests of its fabric, closing mechanism, and performance at temperatures up to 80°C. These extremes reflect the global lifestyles of Project Nightingale’s commissioning clients, who intend to drive their motor cars year-round in every corner of the world.

Elsewhere in the programme, attention turns to the remarkable engineering details that distinguish Project Nightingale. Chief among them is the Piano Boot, a feature never before seen on a Rolls-Royce. Opening sideways on a cantilever, it will be subjected to up to 15,000 cycles of opening and closing, ensuring repeated use never interrupts the perfect theatre and effortless operation of this hallmark gesture for generations to come.

Yet not everything that defines Project Nightingale can be measured. Instrumentation can record precise data, but it is the judgement and instinct of Rolls-Royce’s most experienced engineers that ultimately determine whether a motor car has achieved the serenity and authority for which Rolls-Royce is renowned.
