The history of AtholPlace Hotel and Villa

Being named the best boutique hotel in Johannesburg is no easy feat, but if you’ve ever set foot inside AtholPlace Hotel, you’ll know exactly why it received this accolade.
Originally, AtholPlace was a house owned by interior designer and owner of La Grange Interiors, Sumari Krige, who saw its potential to be turned into a boutique hotel. She made this dream a reality, and then later sold the property to a hotel group.
It was in 2013 that Ed and Anka Zeeman, owners of the Morukuru Family group, took over the property and turned it into the success that it is today. A series of renovations ensued over a period of two years, as well as the addition of the exclusive-use AtholPlace Villa, adjacent to the hotel, and in March 2015 they officially re-launched the property.
The boutique hotel has nine rooms, five of which are superior suites and four that are deluxe suites, better suited to families. All rooms are beautifully furnished and comfortable; offering complimentary Wi-Fi, air-conditioning, coffee and tea facilities, satellite TV, under-floor heating and complimentary Africology toiletries in the bathrooms.
The luxurious and beautifully appointed exclusive-use villa offers three king bedrooms and one children’s bedroom; a private heated pool and garden, as well as a private chef and host, and a personal butler, to see to all guests’ needs.
Dining options are endless – from a braai one day to fine dining the next; as with all Morukuru properties, the Freedom Concept is in play, allowing guests the option to choose what they are in the mood for.
The hotel also has a gym and pool on the property, which is reserved for in-house guests only. The incredible AtholPlace Restaurant, headed up by Executive Chef Willie Malherbe, serves up a wide array of delicious dishes, ensuring something for every palate.
The hotel is dotted with beautiful art throughout, including pieces by Nelson Makamo, a famous south African artist whose work can be viewed at the Everard Reed Gallery, and an amazing Angus Taylor sculpture.
Located only 40 minutes from OR Tambo International Airport and only five minutes from the luxurious suburb of Sandton, AtholPlace Hotel and Villa offers the perfect base for business and leisure travellers, and is a proud member of Relais & Chateaux, a global fellowship of individually owned and operated luxury hotels and restaurants.
